Canada Announces Retaliatory Tariffs Against US

Source: CNBC

Canada will retaliate against new U.S. tariffs by imposing its own trade barriers on U.S. steel, aluminum and other products, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said Thursday.

Freeland said Canada plans to slap dollar-for-dollar tariffs on the U.S. The NAFTA partner's proposed import taxes would also cover whiskey, orange juice and other food products alongside the steel and aluminum tariffs.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the tariffs, announced Thursday by U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, are an affront to the security partnership between the U.S. and Canada.

I'm an adoptee 'in reunion' with my original families and have at least two out of the bunch of Canadian paternal cousins (that I'm 'friends' on FB w/so far) that seem to think Trump's great. I'm hoping this and other crap will change that opinion but they'll probably just find a reason to blame Trudeau again.

From GOPer Ben Sasse to boot -

Officials from the three trading partners — among Washington’s closest allies for decades — have dismissed the idea that their shipments to American customers endanger the United States — and some prominent Republicans attacked it as wrongheaded.

“This is dumb. Europe, Canada, and Mexico are not China, and you don’t treat allies the same way you treat opponents,” said Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.). “We’ve been down this road before—blanket protectionism is a big part of why America had a Great Depression. ‘Make America Great Again’ shouldn’t mean ‘Make America 1929 Again.”

Trump has deliberately antagonized all our major trading partners without ever trying to start any negotiations if he really wanted to make another agreement. The losers are us, the people who will be paying more for all our purchases now, and Trump isn't giving me any additional income to compensate for the costs of his idiotic decision.

Our trade policy was messed up before Trump, but taking Trump's sledgehammer to it is the wrong approach.

Except Fox News and Trump will blame Democrats (naturally) and his kooky base will rush to gorge from the trough (also naturally). You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't arrive at using reason. His base thinks Democrats are the cause of all that's wrong with America (see: libruls, SJWs, snowflakes, hommasexshuls, etc.)

There's a certain subset of the American populace who will never, no never, vote for anything but a Republican, come hell or high water. Lucifer himself could pop up behind Trump during a rally and say "This guy here? He's my bestie" and they'd still vote for him.

Some of them, I think, know better in their secret hearts. They know that Trump conned them, and that they made a horrific mistake in helping put him in office. But admitting that they made such a huge mistake is something they can't bring themselves to do, because it would mean their progressive friends/family/colleagues were right. And sometimes it's easier to forgive others for being wrong than for being right.

I want them on record and then I want a follow up question on what the fuck they intend to do about the idiot head of their party and our country.

That treaty ceded 54 percent of Mexico’s territory to the US in 1848 after a bullshit war that even John Quincy Adams opposed.
