Republicans get 12.45% of Colorado letters questioning citizenship
POSTED: 08/28/2012 12:01:00 AM MDT

The Denver Post

Of the nearly 4,000 letters mailed this month by Secretary of State Scott Gessler to suspected noncitizens — asking that they prove they are eligible to vote or remove themselves from the voter rolls — 12.45 percent went to Republicans, prompting critics to again question whether the effort is politically motivated.

Gessler, a Republican, has strongly denied the allegation that his effort to block noncitizens from voting is intended to keep left-leaning voters from going to the polls in November.

Of the 3,903 letters mailed, the largest number — 1,794 — was sent to unaffiliated voters, while 1,566 went to Democrats and 486 to Republicans. The other 57 went to other parties.

As of Aug. 1, Colorado's registered voters were 35 percent unaffiliated, 33 percent Republicans and 32 percent Democrats.

I question Gessler's competence to continue to be the Secretary of State.

He's due to be ejected in '14 in favor for another Democrat - I'm hoping Bernie will give it another go.

You don't get numbers like 87.5%... unless your aim is 100%.

And as Bill Maher pointed out? every one of these laws was written by Republicans, passed by republicans, and signed into law by republicans.

They're not even TRYING to be sneaky.

Let's see: WITHOUT EXCEPTION all of the voter suppression laws have been enacted in states with state legislations controlled by republicans, enforced by republican secretaries of state and directed overwhelmingly at likely Democratic voters, especially minorities, lower income voters and younger voters.

Politically motivated? Surely, you jest.

Nope, none at all.

Why are the majority other than R's? Trying to skew the vote into their favor, that's why. Just another attempt to steal the election by disenfranchising legitimate voters.
When does it end?

...based on the criminal activity and voter suppression that they are engaging in. They're filthy cheats and they don't give a damn if we know it.

They're going after Colorado and Ohio for sure. I'm guessing that they know that Florida will go to Obama due to the Medicaid issue. I also think they'll try to cheat in Wisconsin as well, which is normally a Dem stronghold. They've got their voter-fraud and cheating skills in place and sharpened after they cheated in the Scott Walker recall theft.

Such pathetic cheats.

Obama just made his third visit in less than a month today. And is supposed to go to Boulder on Sunday which would make it 4 in 1 month.

Rmoney has done nothing to impress Coloradans. The mormons here are very small, and they will not be voting for Rmoney based on the talks I've given them due to issues with the tithing and tax return. The mormons I've talked (and they're a few) - are mostly jack mormons who think Rmoney is an idiot for not releasing his taxes and may just sit it out.

Good.

The Justice Department is not ignoring complaints like this.

It has nothing to do with the Obama campaign, but everything to do with violations of the Voting Rights Act.

least talking about it??

They should at LEAST make a show of being mortified by this undemocratic behavior by red states with red Secretaries of State. You have to be outraged...otherwise rank and file dems will wonder why they are donating, volunteering, voting, supporting, etc.. This undercuts all the efforts....

2004 and 2008...it was the Secretary of State in Ohio who was the gop campaign chair who under-supplied voting booths in democratic areas and probably help tip the scales in a critical state. There were 6-8 hour lines to vote in some places. In 2000 it was Florida, same thing with caging and recounts. How come this hasn't been fixed?

This has to be met with multi-pronged, vigorous opposition. Dem leaders have to be on TV everyday....citizens have to be organized....and since I imagine it's easy to allege illegality or unconstitutionality lawsuits have to be filed ASAP. Dem leaders have to approach gop leaders and show them what's going on and get coordinated denouncing of the practice.

This is starting to be as frustrating as when we all knew there were problems in 2004 and dems were outraged but did nothing about it except write letters and collect petitions until coming into power in 2006....and then they stopped doing even that.

17. I agree. This needs to get more attention from the Democratic party leaders and the media.

MSM doesn't talk about the voter suppression movement currently underway. The only way to get this information out there is for the leaders of the party to talk about it and give it the attention it deserves. I really hope the DOJ can do something about this.

For fuck sake they know exactly what they're doing. They're all not dumb enough to believe in their own bullshit. They KNOW they are deliberate;y engaged in a campaign to block Democratic-leaning demographics from voting - eligible American citizens. How the fuck did we backslide into Jim Crow?
