Obama still determined to close Guantanamo prison

Obama still determined to close Guantanamo prison
By Agence France-Presse
Monday, January 9, 2012

WASHINGTON — The White House insisted Monday that President Barack Obama was determined to close Guantanamo Bay, despite failing to do so by the war on terror camp’s 10th anniversary this week.

Obama declared within a few hours of taking office in January 2009 that he would shutter the camp within a year, saying it was used as a recruiting tool for terrorists, and detrimental to US national security.

But in the face of deep opposition in Congress to moving inmates to the US mainland and over the idea of holding civil trials for key Al-Qaeda suspects, Obama has failed to live up to his vow.

“The commitment that the president has to closing Guantanamo Bay is as firm today as it was during the (2008) campaign,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney.

trial US citizens.

The issue is not power but moral weakness.

actually embracing the mistreatment of others by others. The NDAA, I won't but I'll make it possible for others to. Gitmo, I want to but gosh no one else wants to.

He likes mistreatment it seems, just a few degrees away from him, not "on his plate" so to speak.

Edited to add: Seems the whole drone program and his free use of it against citizens and in lands not our right to breach. ... same thing isn't it in a way. Makes it all so impersonal, so many degrees away from the reality of his decisions, or lack thereof.

we tried to sell the thompson il state prison to the feds for this purpose. the locals were for it but there were forces across the country that went batshit crazy about having terrorists on the motherland. new york city chickened out and rejected the trials.

it ain`t obama`s fault we have some of the dumbest people on the planet who are clueless about what america should stand for.

“The commitment that the president has to closing Guantanamo Bay is as firm today as it was during the (2008) campaign,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney.

So the question then is, how committed is he? Considering it's still open and basically nothing has been achieved here, it would appear his commitment is rather loose and casual.

For all the excuse making he couldn't have been more explicit that he would get this done.

For that reason and many others his re-election chances are now totally based on being able to get a rotten GOP nominee and destroy him with a media blitz.

In case you need an illustration:

A year or so ago I would have called someone who made such a thing a blind Obama hater. Now I find myself agreeing with it.

What's wrong with this picture?

Here's the site I found it on: http://punditspew.com/archive

Notice that that's not a right-wing site, not by a long shot. Almost looks like an OWS sympathetic site.
