Trump has 'disgraced' US prestige: Iran's Khamenei

Source: Agence France-Presse

AFP•November 3, 2018

Tehran (AFP) - Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Saturday that President Donald Trump has "disgraced" US prestige and would be the ultimate loser from renewing sanctions on the Islamic republic.

"This new US president... has disgraced the remnant of America's prestige and that of liberal democracy. America's hard power, that is to say their economic and military power, is declining too," he said on his Persian Twitter account, quoting a speech in Tehran.

A defiant Khamenei dismissed the renewed US sanctions -- including an oil embargo -- that take effect on Monday.

"The challenge between the US and Iran has lasted for 40 years so far and the US has made various efforts against us: military, economic and media warfare," he said.

I expect tomorrow bigfoot will be observed going to Starbucks for a latte. That is about the likelihood of something like this happening and yet Trump still has his supporters, he lies with impunity and there doesnt appear to be a single honorable Republican in office left. So really why am I surprised.

We went with friends who vote republican but are really not very political, have just always voted Republican. And had never been to Europe.

Let’s just say they now have a whole new perspective. Since returning I have heard one of them actually defending the standard of living in Europe when talking to an acquaintance who started in on the whole ‘socialist Europeans’ even though he has never left the US.

And our friends have no illusions anymore about what Europeans think of Trump. Especially a German couple we shared a table with.

I am glad the wife and I have kept our relationship non political because had we not it may have ruined a 30 year friendship. And I can see them starting to reevaluate their beliefs.

They now know how little respect the rest of the world has for us.
