During Montana Campaign Stop, Trump Turns Rally Cry Personal On Jon Tester

‘I’ve never forgotten it,’ the president of Tester blocking the nomination offormer White House doctor Adm. Ronny Jackson to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs.

But Tester, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, appeared to elicit a level of consternation that Trump usually reserves only for Democratic leadership, protesters, and the media.

“You take the best person in this group, that’s the equivalent of what this man is, and his family,” Trump said of Jackson. “And Jon Tester tried to ruin him...That’s why I’m here.” He quickly added, “And I’m here also for these two great people,” Rosendale and Montana Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte.


Tester is narrowly leading Rosendale, according to recent polling in the race. Republicans in the state, which Trump carried by more than 20 points in 2016, hope that his visit will fire up the party’s voters in the face of intense voter enthusiasm on the Democratic side.


Trump has harbored intense dislike for Tester personally since he circulated allegations that Jackson, then Trump’s nominee to lead the VA, had freely dispensed painkillers to White House staff, showed up to work drunk, and created a hostile work environment.

Days after Jackson withdrew his nomination, Trump called on Tester to resign and threatened to spread damaging allegations against the Senator. “Tester started throwing out things that he’s heard,” Trump said at a rally in April. “Well, I know things about Tester that I could say, too. And if I said them, he’d never be elected again.”

Trump tries swaying close Montana Senate race


Belgrade, Montana (CNN)Air Force One is landing in places this fall it rarely has before. And it's never flown so often to Big Sky Country.
President Donald Trump on Saturday made his fourth trip to Montana since July, which political historians here believe is more than any other US president. Harry Truman visited three times, but over a four-year span.

For Tester to win, he needs Trump voters.

Rosendale, a former Maryland developer who moved to Montana in 2002, served three terms in the state Legislature before becoming state auditor. He has clung tightly to Trump, often wearing his signature blue suit and red tie.

The race could also be influenced by a late development: Libertarian candidate Rick Breckenridge threw his support behind Rosendale this week.

His name will still be on the ballot, but Breckenridge said he favors Rosendale, which angered some Libertarian activists in the state. Six years ago, the Libertarian candidate captured more than 6% of the vote in a race Tester won by only 4 percentage points.


While strategists on both sides believe that the minds of most voters are already made up -- most Montanans, in fact, cast their ballots by mail and about two-thirds of the electorate already has -- Trump believes he can increase Republican turnout with another visit and one final attempt at branding Tester as a Democrat.
"The Democrats have truly turned into an angry mob," Trump said on his last trip here. "And your senator is one of them."

6. Tester did NOT try to ruin Ronnie Jackson.

Jackson was an abusive, pill-popping alcoholic. He was an embarrassment to the NAVY.

Tester did his job and voted to keep a totally unqualified man (with NO experience in running a large, multi-faceted government organization) from taking the reins of the VA from an equally unqualified WH. trmp fired a very qualified Dr. David Shulkin because he would not go along with the notion of privatizing the VA. Jackson would have marched lock-step with the WH in doing exactly that.

Said Shulkin: "It should not be this hard to serve your country."
