Ted Cruz Defeats Beto O'Rourke for Senate in Texas

Source: NY Times

By Manny Fernandez

EL PASO, Tex. — Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, won re-election on Tuesday in one of the tightest midterm races in the country, defeating the best-financed and most popular Democrat to run in Texas in years, Representative Beto O’Rourke.

Mr. Cruz’s narrow victory did more than dash Democratic hopes that the party could capture a Senate seat in Texas for the first time since 1988. It promised to restore Mr. Cruz’s standing as a far-right force in American politics, after many leaders in his own party questioned whether he was likable enough to run successfully against a candidate like Mr. O’Rourke, an El Paso congressman known for his charisma.

“This was an election about hope and about the future, and the people of Texas rendered a verdict that we want a future with more jobs and more security and more freedom,” Mr. Cruz told hundreds of supporters at a Houston hotel ballroom.

Mr. O’Rourke appeared before his supporters shortly after 10 p.m. Blocks from the United States border with Mexico, at a minor-league baseball stadium in his hometown, El Paso, Mr. O’Rourke stepped onto a concert stage and said he had spoken to Mr. Cruz and congratulated him on his victory.

And there were reports of people voting Democrat, then their vote would be switched to show a republican. If they (the FBI) had people watching very closely at this , I think that it could have been manipulated for him to win. I don't trust cruz or trump, or putin. If any money is traced to cruz funneled in any way from putin to him or his campaign , it will become exposed , and ted will be in serious troubles, along with trump and others.

4. I Never Got The Impression From Cruz That He Was Concerned He Would Lose....

He seemed to remain cocky all through the campaigning - right up to election day. It was like he knew that the fix was in and that he would retain his seat. I was always suspect that some funny business was going on behind the scenes. Texas was just too crucial of a State for the Repugs and Trump to lose. If any funny business was going on around the country - Texas was the State that I suspected the funny business to happen.

Beto is/was just too big a threat to them - both for 2016 and 2020.

to paraphrase a line from the movie, "Chinatown".

"forget it, Jake, it's texas".

until the gerrymandering and voter suppression is dealt with, nothing will change.

He should have won by 20 points. He's a wet firecracker who everyone in Washington hates. Like the corpse flower, his time has come and gone.

9. Beto O'Rourke accomplished many good things despite not beating Cruz' sorry ass

First, no one has won a state-wide election here since Ann Richard's loss to W. back in the 80s. No one really thought O'Rourke had even a little chance but he ran a great and impressive race against Cruz . Beto WILL be back I predict.

One great victory I was able to savor, despite being very upset that Beto didn't make it, is that his coattails helped Houston and northwest Harris County finally flip my congressman, John Culberson's seat to a Democrat, Lizzie Fletcher. Democrats have not held this seat since George HW Bush won it in 1966. Not only that, in losing Culberson, the Repukes lost a leadership position.

11. was so very, very close about 350k or so vote difference. That isn't much.

don't know how many votes were thrown out, or people who found out late they couldn't vote. would like to see the final results once everything is counted. break it down by districts to see if the gerrymandered district maps had an effect.

so very close.

Governor Gregg Abbott got over 400K MORE votes than Cruz, so O'Rourke has at least some crossover appeal. Dems also picked up 2 seats in the House. 9 term GOP do-nothing John Culberson was sent packing by Lizzie Fletcher with a 4% margin. Democratic judges won across the board in Harris and Fort Bend counties (Houston area).

Republican party knows full well if they can gerrymander districts & disenfranchise a very small percent of D votes, they can squeak a win here & there.
