Kansas voters made history Tuesday when they selected Sharice Davids to be their next congresswoman.
Davids, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, will be the first Native American woman to serve in Congress a distinction she shared with New Mexicos Deb Haaland, who also won Tuesday and the first openly LGBT person to represent the state of Kansas.
The political newcomer defeated four-term incumbent Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder to capture Kansas 3rd Congressional District. Its the first time a Democrat has won the suburban Kansas City seat in a decade.
We have the opportunity to reset expectations about what people think when they think of Kansas, Davids said during her victory speech before hundreds of supporters at the Embassy Suites in Olathe. We know there are so many of us who welcome everyone, who see everyone and who know that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed.

(176 posts)As badly as I wanted Jay Sidie to win in 2016 (and I wanted him to win BAD), I prefer Davids to him, so I guess I can say it was worth the wait. Hopefully KS continues to turn less red/more blue!

Democrat Debra Haaland has defeated Republican Janice E. Arnold-Jones in a New Mexico U.S. House race, earning a groundbreaking congressional victory as a Native American woman and keeping an open seat under Democratic control.
Haaland is an enrolled Laguna Pueblo member. She was one of a few Native American women seeking to become the first elected to Congress on Tuesday.
Republican Yvette Herrell, a member of the Cherokee Nation, is in a hotly contested race for another open U.S. House seat in New Mexico. And Democrat Sharice Davids, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, won a U.S. House seat in Kansas.
