Democratic women make unprecedented gains in DuPage County

Source: daily herald

DuPage County Democrats longed for it.

DuPage Republicans feared it.

When it finally came Tuesday, it wasn't so much a blue wave that swept down the DuPage ballot as it was a political tsunami that both carried and lifted Democrats -- all women -- to unprecedented heights in county government in an area that long had been a GOP stronghold.

When the night began, Democrats held just one seat on the 18-member county board and no countywide posts. By Wednesday morning, Democrats had captured seven of 12 available county board seats -- including at least one in all six districts. Another Democrat had become county clerk and two relative unknowns had put serious scares into other Republicans, including the county board chairman.

It was the largest Democratic victory in DuPage County in anyone's memory, giving the party far bigger gains than in the post-Watergate years or any of the eight years of the Obama presidency.

Here's a quick look at the newly formed Blue Women Group -- the Democrats who won county seats.

Congratulations on your win as campaign manager! I would say we had a blue wave here in Illinois at least.

Congratulations!
If I read that right Repugs still control the board, but it won't be just a closed clubhouse any more.

Here's hoping for a successful term!

I'm from that area and am very familiar with the county. It was always very conservative in my adult lifehood.

And the whole county party worked like hell...they left no votes on the table at all..I am so impressed! We had a Casten canvasser at our door after dark...making sure that we had made it to the polling place (we’d already gone before the rush hour). They made sure that polling places that had experienced issues were open later..people were energized and did us proud!

that they were in deep “doo doo”...I started to get polling calls asking questions about state rep and state senate races and I’ve never gotten those before...and at the very end there were actual tv commercials..I’m still in shock about the magnitude of the wave in Dupage. I’m in County Board district 4, I would have been thrilled if I could have voted for your sister. We did elect Mary FitzGerald Ozog in our district though..

who congratulated her and confessed that they ran a shit campaign.
there were many rumors in the last month that r's were expecting to lose 6 seats.
villa was a real nice win, too. she worked her buns off. knocking doors 60 hours a week for the last 2 years. that's how you do it.
i dont think these entitled old farts want to do that. looking forward to a few retiring before the next round.

I’ve lived most of my life here and seem to always pick the reddest of the red towns. I’m so happy to finally have some representation! So happy for all of us, but especially you and your sister.
