House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) ripped President Trumps appointment of Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general, saying in a new interview that his appointment does violence to the Constitution.
"It does violence to the Constitution and the vision of our founders to appoint such a person in such a manner to be the chief legal officer in our country. And that's bipartisan," Pelosi told CBS News's Margaret Brennan in an interview set to air Sunday on Face the Nation.
Trump tapped Whitaker to lead the Justice Department after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Wednesday that he was resigning at the president's request. Whitaker had served as Sessionss chief of staff since September of last year.
Shortly after Sessions's ouster, Trump also announced that Whitaker would oversee special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had supervised Mueller's probe since Sessions recused himself last year.

(128,735 posts)and has apparently already settled in. He needs to be removed and one of the other deputies/assistants who were already confirmed to their lesser positions, needs to be permitted to be "acting" until a formal nomination is made, goes through confirmation hearings, and is voted on. His current position as Chief of Staff" for Sessions prior to Sessions resigning, was not something that required a Senate confirmation.
The ridiculous argument that is being made by the current administration is that "he was already confirmed" - basing that on when he had been a U.S. Attorney under Shrub. But what they fail to realize is that when he was illegally appointed into this "acting" position, he was NOT currently working in the position or capacity of a U.S. Attorney, having resigned that position after Obama took office and his replacement was confirmed, so he has to start all over.
