Denham loses GOP seat in California
Source: The Hill
Democrat Josh Harder has defeated Rep. Jeff Denham (Calif.), a week after the midterm elections were held, knocking off a Republican long seen as vulnerable.
The Associated Press called the race for Harder on Tuesday night.
Denham had sought to distance himself from President Trump on immigration, helping to launch the upstart effort from moderate Republicans to force votes on legislation protecting the so-called Dreamers, undocumented immigrants brought to the country illegally as kids, even as GOP leaders were fighting to keep the issue off the floor.
Denhams discharge petition gambit ultimately failed, however, as conservatives maneuvered successfully to block votes on any Dreamer bill with a chance of passing. The defeat of efforts to prop up the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA an Obama-era initiative Trump has fought to dismantle has left an uncertain future for Dreamers, while putting Denham in the unenviable position of claiming success in failure. The issue may have resonated in Californias 10th district, where 34 percent of eligible voters are Hispanic.

(808 posts)I'm really surprised (and pleased) that Harder won. This part of the Central Valley is VERY Republican, and Denham has been their representative for eight years. If an area like this can be part of the blue wave, anything is possible!!

(767 posts)I AM GLAD THIS ELECTION WAS WON. I LIVE IN THE CALIFORNIA VALLEY AND IT IS A PLACE WHERE REPUBLICANS THRIVE. SLOWLY DEMOCRATS ARE MOVING INTO THESE CONSERVATIVE AREAS AND DISPLACING THE CONSERVATIVES. MY DISTRICT LOST 55% REPUBLICAN 45% DEMOCRATIC, BUT IN THE PAST THE DEMOCRATIC VOTE WAS OVER 30%.........CHEERS
