U.S. senators to defy Republican leader on Mueller protections

Source: Reuters

NOVEMBER 14, 2018 / 11:48 AM / UPDATED AN HOUR AGO

David Morgan, Richard Cowan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two U.S. senators, defying opposition from top Republicans, vowed on Wednesday to push for action on a bipartisan measure that would protect a federal investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential election.

Republican Senator Jeff Flake and Democratic Senator Chris Coons said they would take to the Senate floor at around 4:15 p.m. EST, to ask for their colleagues’ consent to allow a vote that could anger President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly dismissed the federal probe as a “witch hunt.”

But the move was unlikely to succeed. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is firmly against the idea of voting on a measure to protect the investigation, according to an aide.

Another party leader, Senate Republican whip John Cornyn, has said he favors an alternative measure that would simply put the Senate on record as backing the leader of the probe, Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

I hope Texas can put up a good challenger, although he's not as much of an asshole (outwardly) as Ted Cruz, so he may be even harder to beat.

That he WILL NOT sign a measure guaranteeing Mueller won't be messed with...

This should be obvious to EVERYBODY what he is clearly doing

The American people want Mueller to continue the investigation. When mcconnell refuses it will show the American people that the repubs in the Senate don't give a damn. We are ready to be in 2020 election mode. This will make a great photo op for the Dems during the campaign. Attacking Flake is just plain dumb.

Can expect similar results next election to vote them out of office, because they will not be part of OUR government allowing the rule of law to become trump's rule of law. Those involved with trump will be all held accountable, and any Congress person took Russian money from putin funneled to them thru donors or other groups or people , they'll pay dearly for their criminal activities. Their refusals now is totally unacceptable , and they will regret it. Justice will prevail.

and be in place.

However, Jeff Flake? Has he ever followed up on anything he's said he'd do?

Cornyn is trying to play both sides, wanting a non-binding statement of support.
