Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island are in for a sudden winter wallop Thursday evening, as a quick-hitting burst of snow rides up the Interstate 95 corridor beginning shortly after dark.
It wont be a blockbuster in terms of accumulations, but a three- or four-hour burst of heavy snow will pile up fast and make for dicey travel. With snowfall rates of one to three inches per hour during this time frame, the stage is set for a dangerous travel period after dark for the New York City area and most of southern New England.
The first flakes will arrive in the New York City tri-state area and southwest Connecticut around sunset and during the prime evening commute, and will spread over much of southern New England by late evening. Southern New Hampshire and Vermont will get into the action into and through the overnight.
Going to be a disastrously bad commute NYC area up into CT thanks to these rates, tweeted Eric Fisher, a broadcast meteorologist in Boston.

UPDATE:
Winter Storm Dumps Snow, Freezing Rain on Eastern Half of U.S.
One of the first major snowstorms of the season swept across the eastern half of the U.S. on Thursday, spreading ice and sleet and leaving at least seven people dead in weather-related traffic accidents. Winter weather watches, warnings, and advisories were in effect for about 88 million people from Missouri to Maine as heavy snow and freezing rain snarled traffic and prompted schools to close. The storm paralyzed roads in New York City and dumped 6 inches of snow on Central Park, making this the snowiest November on record for the city since 1938, according to NBC New York. The snow also caused chaos for commuters, with drivers on New Yorks George Washington Bridge abandoning cars and the Port Authority Bus Terminal so overcrowded that authorities had to block people from entering. Icy conditions caused by the storm have also been blamed for at least seven deaths in Ohio, Arkansas, Indiana, and Mississippi. At least two people were killed and 44 injured Wednesday when a tour bus heading to a casino lost control on an icy overpass and flipped over in Mississippi. Three people were also killed in separate crashes on icy roads in Arkansas, and authorities in Indiana and Ohio have reported two additional weather-related deaths.

If I posted a story of a similar amount of snow in the Midwest, it would get locked as local news within minutes.

(60,536 posts)I doubt it would get locked but, if you want to have a discussion, try reading the article.
Have a great night.

As far as I'm concerned, a bit of snow is local news, not of national interest.

Hit ignore and have a nice day.
Weather is as local as one can get, LBN is not for local news.

Hey, I offered my opinion. Unlike you, I did not try to control what others say.
Hope no moderators note your insults and threats and give you a timeout.
Have a very nice day.

(11,791 posts)If you have a problem, take it up with MIRT. Sorry that what happens in cities of 2+ million isn't of concern to you, but that's your problem.
I am daily amazed at the things that get people's panties in a bunch.

(6,930 posts)One of the largest snow storms in Nov in history of the State but I doubt that it would have been allowed on the LBN page of DU for more than a minute or two.

Just starting here in southern Cayuga County...

(73,524 posts)is at Wells College, near the lake. She said it is really coming down there now.
I think the Rt 17 accidents were people getting out of work, in a hurry to get home and beat the storm. Even here in Chenango County, some of the 5 o'clock traffic was going way too fast. Most people were going slow, though.
Thanks for the P&SB link. I had looked there earlier today, trying to plan my day. (I was glad that my son who works in the Binghamton area schools made it home safely on I-88!)

(4,429 posts)I got up about 11 last night and shoveled a few inches. It was very heavy snow . And then a few more inches this morning.
It's still snowing up here in VT, but mostly a dusting at this point. (Of course, the street plow just rolled on by......so I have to get out to the driveway again......)

(4,835 posts)We had a sold-out house for our Thursday show - 290 paid in advance seats.
Only 25 people made it to our 2PM show.
Our audience is mostly bussed-in seniors from the PA/MD/VA/WVA area.
Only WVA crew could make it.
Non-refundable! The show went on.
But this was an unusual storm(s) for many reasons and worthy of LBN.
