DeVos proposes overhaul to campus sexual misconduct rules

Source: AP

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is proposing a major overhaul to the way colleges handle complaints of sexual misconduct.

The Education Department released a plan Friday that would require schools to investigate sexual assault and harassment only if the alleged misconduct was reported to certain campus officials and only if it occurred on campus or other areas overseen by the school.

The plan would narrow the definition of sexual harassment and allow students accused of misconduct to cross-examine accusers in campus hearings.

DeVos’ proposal would replace Obama-era guidelines she scrapped last year, saying they were unfair to students accused of sexual misconduct.

law firms dealing with campus crime. Students wouldn't go to the college. They'd go to attorneys, to prosecutors, etc.

And the colleges/universities would get the bad press for cultivating unsafe campuses, exactly the opposite of what they're trying to avoid.

I believe DeVos is working overtime to continue the GOP plan to disenfranchise women from academic achievement -- or hell, even attendance of schools and universities altogether. It should be abundantly clear that this so-called party wants to make women subservient to and dependent on males.

Some of them really hate their fellow women. And some of the older ones really hate young women.

I think it was Phyllis Schlafly who said something like if you don't want to get raped in college, don't go to college. Or if you can't afford birth control, hold an aspirin between your knees.

Betsy DeVos, you won’t get away with what you are doing. We are organizing to put an end to your destruction of civil rights protections for students.

Especially with the definition of sexual harassment - sexual conduct "so severe, pervasive and objectively offensive that it effectively denies a person equal access to the school's education program or activity."

Interesting phrase: "objectively offensive." Who decides what meets that vague standard?
