Democrats control all Orange County House seats as Gil Cisneros wins 39th Congressional District, co

Source: Orange County register

Democrats are set to control every House seat in Orange County, completing their swift and historic sweep of the conservative bastion, after the Associated Press on Saturday, Nov. 17 projected that Gil Cisneros would win the 39th Congressional District race.

The regionís sudden political shift marks a sharp rebuke of the GOP and of President Donald Trump, who acted as an accelerant for a county that has slowly crept more Democratic over the past three decades.

The 39th was the last to flip of the five Southern California Republican-held seats targeted by Democrats this cycle. Democrats trailed in all but one of those districts on election night but clawed back as late tallies of vote-by-mail and provisional ballots swung heavily in their favor.

Cisneros widened his lead on Saturday to 3,020 votes after trailing his GOP opponent, Young Kim, by nearly 3,900 votes on Election Day.

Cisneros, a Navy veteran and former Republican whose life changed when he won a $266 million jackpot in 2010, will represent a district spanning Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. The seat has is currently represented by 13-term GOP Congresswoman Ed Royce, who in January opted to retire.

4. MN and CA have in common that

...every House Republican from each state voted to take away healthcare last year with the AHCA.

And a big percentage of Republicans representing the suburbs got voted out.

In MN, 3 Republicans representing suburbs of Minneapolis voted for the AHCA. All ran for re-election and 2 lost.

5. I never thought I'd see this.

The OC was rightwing hell when I lived out there. Their newspapers always shocked and appalled me with editorials and letters.

7. Those ignorant, racists assholes are still here, and still writing sickening editorials.

They are a vocal minority, but slowly dying off.

9. As always, California is setting the example that the rest of the nation should follow.

There should be no place anywhere in government for racists. The ReTHUG party is a hate group, nothing more.

11. I recall an exchange I once had

When my parents' friends asked me if I would approve of my parents retiring to Orange County, and I told them that I didn't, reason being that it was too Republican.

My parents ended up moving to Las Vegas instead, but regardless, I will happily admit that, at least for the time being, OC has proven me wrong.
