MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. Vice President Mike Pence Russia had nothing to do with meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, Interfax reported on Monday, during discussions about an upcoming meeting between Putin and President Donald Trump.
Putin and Pence spoke in Singapore last week about key issues that could be discussed at the meeting between the two leaders, expected to take place at the G20 summit in Argentina in late November, a Kremlin spokesman said.
Pence raised the issue of external meddling in the U.S. election but Putin told him that the Russian state had nothing to do ... and can not have anything to do with meddling in any electoral processes, Interfax quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying.

(70,294 posts)Paul Manafort, who was hit Monday with 12 counts tied to alleged financial schemes, pushed for Pence to become Trump's running mate and even managed to talk Trump out of his doubts. As the Trump administration now works to distance itself from Manafort, his Pence pick stands among the best evidence of his impact as Trump's short-lived campaign manager.
Before Trump formally announced Pence as his vice presidential candidate, it was Manafort who made sure it happened, The New York Times reported last year.
Trump had hesitated to settle on Pence, who was governor of Indiana. Trump was fielding last-ditch appeals from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and publicly said he had not made a final, final decision until advisers like Manafort reminded him of the importance of uniting the GOP around conservative Christian values.
CBS News reported that Pence was Manafort's "first choice" and that Manafort even lied about mechanical problems on Trump's plane to make the soon-to-be GOP nominee stay an extra day in Indiana to get to know Pence. In a phone call, Manafort assured Trump that Pence was the right choice and made a case that won over the real estate tycoon.

(7,142 posts)This is from Reuters, it only speaks about one side, Putin's side of the narrative. If this were a fair article it would mention that all of the U.S. intelligence agencies determined that Russia did interfere in our elections and that Mueller has indicted over a dozen Russians. Once that part of the narrative is told it sure makes Pence look like Putin stooge to me. Yes, Manafort did pick Pence, one has to wonder why?

(14,154 posts)Could have started the article as something like...
All US intelligence agencies, including the CIA and FBI, continue to retain their conclusions that Putin and Russia interfered with the election in favor of Donald Trump. Their findings are conclusive. In spite of that, VP Pence, whom the convicted Manaford hand picked for Trump as VP, met with Putin and declared that he believes Putin over all the US intelligence agencies.
