Ivanka Trump sent hundreds of emails last year to White House aides, Cabinet officials and her assistants using a personal account, many of them in violation of federal records rules, according to people familiar with a White House examination of her correspondence.

White House ethics officials learned of Trump’s repeated use of personal email when reviewing emails gathered last fall by five Cabinet agencies to respond to a public records lawsuit. That review revealed that throughout much of 2017, she often discussed or relayed official White House business using a private email account with a domain that she shares with her husband, Jared Kushner.

The discovery alarmed some advisers to President Trump, who feared that his daughter’s practices bore similarities to the personal email use of Hillary Clinton, an issue he made a focus of his 2016 campaign. Trump attacked his Democratic challenger as untrustworthy and dubbed her “Crooked Hillary” for using a personal email account as secretary of state.

Some aides were startled by the volume of Ivanka Trump’s personal emails — and taken aback by her response when questioned about the practice. Trump said she was not familiar with some details of the rules, according to people with knowledge of her reaction.

The White House referred requests for comment to Ivanka Trump’s attorney and ethics counsel, Abbe Lowell.

36. What was more questionable was that she did not leave the State Department work emails that

they were already obligated to give to Congress and media (FOIA requests). Technically, her work related emails should have been considered work products -- ie belonging to the State Department. At minimum, this was uncomfortable for the second term Obama administration.

Here, one should question if Ivanka and others were not using government emails to avoid potential scrutiney.

Once the Clinton emails were out, we saw that was nothing controversial - other than a small number of classified emails -- which would have been equally a problem if sent to a dot gov account - as that is not a secure system either classified information. Even then, many of those things were upgraded in their classification in 2015/2016. This makes sense if something that seemed inocuous originally led to things the government later saw would "out" things they wanted secret.

Where I agree with you 100% was that there was no consistent procedure to use .gov by the secretaries preceding Clinton. Email became increasingly how people communicated over time. This meant that Albright said she did not use email, Powell used email butthe .gov system was just an intranet - so he used a personal commercial account for all email not to someone in the State Department. Condi Rice also claimed not to use email. Note no one restricted their non classified work email to .gov. When John Kerry became secretary, he used .gov almost exclusively. The almost was explained that some people, who had known him for years, used private accounts writing to him. His staff transfered them regularly to the state department account and his responses went from there.

At this point, after at least 2 years of hearing about Clinton's emails, it is clear that there is now a standard -- one Ivanka clearly ignored.
