The Latest: Ukraine says 2 navy vessels hit by Russian fire
Source: AP
Ukraine says that the number of boats hit by Russian fire has increased to two, with two crew members wounded, and that both vessels have been seized by Russia.
The Ukrainian navy made the announcement in a statement late Sunday. Russia didnt immediately comment on the claims.
Hours earlier, Ukraine said that a Russian coast guard vessel rammed into a Ukrainian navy tugboat, resulting in damage to the ships engines and hull. The incident took place Sunday as three Ukrainian naval ships were transiting from Odessa on the Black Sea to Mariupol in the Sea of Azov, via the Kerch Strait. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
The spokesman for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says that the leader is convening an emergency meeting of the militarys top brass amid tensions with Russia near the Crimean Peninsula.

(9,287 posts)This attack is coming the day after Ukrainian Memorial Day for Holodomor. It is the remembrance of the Ukraine famine planned and orchestrated by Joseph Stalin to eliminate the Ukrainian independence movement. Estimates are between 3.3 and 7.5 million people died.
In other words an intentional attack by Putin with added humiliation about the memorial.
Holodomor was a man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine in 1932 and 1933 that killed millions of Ukrainians. It is also known as the Terror-Famine and Famine-Genocide in Ukraine, and sometimes referred to as the Great Famine or The Ukrainian Genocide of 193233.

It is what it is. tRump spoke to Putin and he said he didn't do it and tRump believes him. Ukraine should belong to Russia anyway. They used to be part of Russia. What happened again?
Sad. What a screwed up reality we live in. Oh well, when circumstances turn against you, start a war!

Weve been lucky so far. Trumps idiocy, narcissism, and laziness and an international incident would not mix well.
Damn...can you even imagine the outcome if he had been in the Oval Office during the Cuban Missile Crisis?

The European Union has called on Russia and Ukraine to act with utmost restraint to de-escalate the situation in the Black Sea.
Ukraine says that three of its ships have been seized by the Russian coast guard, including two that were fired upon, and two crew members were wounded. Russia has blamed Ukraine for preparing and orchestrating provocations.
The EU, in a statement from foreign affairs spokeswoman Maja Kocijanic, also said that it expected Russia to restore freedom of passage through the Kerch Strait after Moscow blockaded it.

(5,586 posts)Keep in mind we sat around and did nothing back in 2014 when Russia invaded Ukraine and seized Crimea.
The last thing i want this fuckface to do is start talking shit to Russia and sending US troops or the Navy to the Black Sea. I suspect Turkey wouldnt let significant US Naval assets through the Bosphorus or Dardanelles straights anyway.

But it could easily become real now that we have the Tiny Handed Tin Pot Dicktator in the Whitehouse.

(101,295 posts)On Monday, Ukrainian MPs will vote on whether to declare nationwide martial law in response to the attack following an emergency war cabinet held by the president, Petro Poroshenko. He said that the imposition of martial law would not imply a declaration of war and was only intended for defensive purposes.
Ukraine has also requested an emergency UN security council meeting in response to the incident.

In a televised war council meeting with the president, Ukrainian military commanders said 23 sailors had been taken captive by Russia, six were wounded in fighting, including two seriously.

(35,293 posts)for little green men speaking Russian (albeit with an Ukrainian accent) to accidentally plant lots of C4 charges on the pylons to that bridge from Kerch' to Krym.
Only after the Ukraine navy manages to contract for any clearing of the shipping channels, of course. And clearly only in a truly bizarre example of synchronicity, such a contract being signed the morning of the "economic boom" that crippled Crimea.
I speculated a few days ago whether or not Putin's extremely low (for him) popularity ratings would be taken out in the near future on Ukraine or the Baltics. Now we know. He's merely ramped up more of the same tactics from the Donbas and nearby areas.
