Trump blasts GM over Ohio plant closure

Source: The Hill

BY SYLVAN LANE AND BRETT SAMUELS - 11/26/18 03:27 PM EST

President Trump said Monday that he urged General Motors Chairman and CEO Mary Barra to continue producing cars in Ohio after the company announced it planned to idle its sole assembly plant in the state.

Trump told reporters at the White House that he told Barra that GM “better get back in” Ohio “soon” and assign a new product to the Lordstown, Ohio, plant that could soon be shuttered by the company.

GM announced Monday that it would close up to five North American auto factories — four in the U.S. — including the Lordstown plant currently assembling the Chevrolet Cruze. GM will discontinue the Cruze in March and has not assigned a new product to the plant, likely closing it. Trump told reporters Monday that he spoke to Barra on Sunday night and “was very tough.” He said he urged Barra to keep the Lordstown plant running and promised to put “a lot of pressure” on GM.

“I think you’re going to see something else happen there, but I’m not happy about it,” Trump said, departing the White House for campaign stops in Mississippi. “I have no doubt that in a not too distant future they’ll put something else. They better put something else in.”

And hires foreigners over Americans in this country, and he wants to act like he can order them to stay? Or threaten them now? More businesses will be leaving even faster from him doing this. HE wants it where they serve only him too , or else. This won't be the last auto company doing this, and others will follow. Unlike President Obama who helped save them in their time of need, trump does the opposite and hurts them.

little intellect is worried his Red neck Base in Ohio will bail on him. American based Autos are being wiped out by Trump Policies as well as total lack of future planning.. When you recall 2-4 million Cars for Faults that should have never happened. Well does 2000 sound fimiliar.

plants. One would think that UAW members owe their jobs to President Obama and the Democrats for the
bail out package back in 2009 that mostly all Republicans rejected. However walk into any GM plant today and you will see (perhaps on the men's room wall Trump 2020 written or on their vehicles in the parking lots Trump "seal our borders" or Trump/Pence 2020 so are they really grateful they have a job...because of Obama? Nope
For them its Trump all the way.
Closing these plants will hurt the economy (and not just Ohio) but a lot of these people will continue supporting Republicans.
Think of all the GM suppliers that will close...

Donnie (Ivy League) sure doesn't seem to understand basic capitalism. Ford and GM are dropping these products (small compact and sedan sized vehicles) to concentrate on making products that earn them more profits per vehicle (SUVs and Pick Ups). That's good business sense for current market conditions (this may be a bad position to be in if consumer tastes, possibly driven by energy costs, change in the future). I suspect they will still build some cars outside the US and import them if they can earn a decent return on their investment. Normally functionally capitalism works this way, shifting resources to maximize return. In other words, make more with less.

In the valley...post after post on Facebook. It sucks the life out of you. I don’t want to re-live the Bush years again! The last big blow was our Delphi jobs and sat and watched homes being foreclosed and people leaving Ohio in hopes of work somewhere else. We are out of places to run.... Walmart or the Coal mines is not what we have in mind. Tax cuts are killing us again!😢

Funny pumpkin head doesn't seem to care about the fact that Michigan is losing 2 plants. Possibly because Michigan went blue in a big way and Ohio is still red? Inquiring people.

vote because they see Clinton's NAFTA deal as something where Bill Clinton sold them out - leading to many plant closures. (I'm not going to debate that - in my view, it is a fact - ask Michael Moore)

The tariffs that preceded this, over GMs protests, are going to go against Trump along with these closures.

Without the support of the Rust Belt, Trump cannot win in 2020
