Democrats win House race in New Mexico, have now gained 39 seats

Source: CNN

By Eli Watkins Updated 1:46 PM ET

Washington (CNN)Democrat Xochitl Torres Small has defeated Republican Yvette Herrell in one of the nation's last outstanding House races, New Mexico's secretary of state certified Tuesday morning.

The official result brings the total number of Democratic gains in the House to 39 seats, with one race outstanding, according to CNN's count.

Herrell claimed victory in New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District race on election night earlier this month, but as ballots continued to be counted, Torres Small took a lead in the vote count in the race to replace outgoing GOP Rep. Steve Pearce.

As of midday Tuesday, CNN had yet to project a result in California's 21's Congressional District, where Democrat TJ Cox pulled ahead of Republican Rep. David Valadao on Monday evening.

2. With the special election flips from 2017-2018 included, Democrats have flipped over 400 seats....

...since Trump took office two years ago.

Remember how during Obama's 8 years, Republicans flipped roughly 1,000 seats? It means that on this track, if Trump was to be president for 8 years (just hypothetically speaking, I think he loses in 2020), Democrats would be on track to flip roughly 1,600 seats.

Kinda puts the 2009-2016 Republican flips into context, it was a lot, but not as many as we thought.

4. Actually those seat flips were only about 900 over ten years. We regained 350 of them....

...in one night on November 6.

I think we're in line for a huge wave in 2020 too, with the coat tails of a presidential election.

6. I always thought it was odd when DUers claimed the house was too gerrymandered

and we should give up or just focus on a few blue bubbles on the coasts.

Then we see situations like this year's election when there are many close elections all across America and it should be a reminder that every vote is important.

7. Guess it's time for the New York Times and Chuck Todd to tell us the Blue Wave didn't happen. Again.

9. Yes, the NY Times, Chuck Todd, and some Democrats and democratic allies:

+39 House seats (one pending with the Democrat in the lead, possibly 40?)
-2, maybe -3 Senate seats (not bad considering 25 Democratic seats were up for election compared to only 8 republican seats)
+7 Governor seats

PLUS, more than 350 state legislature seats, wiping out more than one third of those "1,000" (actually only 900) seats that we've frittered away over the last 10 years.

All this in only one night!
