(CNN)Rep. Jim Jordan is expected to be the top Republican on the influential House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in the next Congress, after the GOP Ohioan dropped his effort to be President Donald Trump's chief defender on the House Judiciary Committee.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who will be the House's no. 2 Republican next year, said the Steering Committee, whose members decide which Republicans will be the top GOP member on each committee, had decided Jordan would get the Oversight Committee position, after Jordan expressed interest in the position to the committee on Thursday evening.

The race developed rapidly when Jordan and Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, who had previously expressed interest in the role, met together off of the room where the Steering Committee was gathered. After an extended period of time, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy walked into the room and invited Jordan to go into the room where Steering was deliberating...............................

.................In recent days, a congressional source confirmed that there had been discussions between the President and members about the leadership dynamics and committee roles. Before Thanksgiving, CNN reported that in private conversations with McCarthy, the President pushed for Jordan and Meadows to have the top Republican positions on key committees, according to a source familiar.

That means his job will be to sit down and shut the f*ck up. The days of uncontested Republican theater in the House are over for now...you'll have to go to FOX to spread your misinformation.

and would have had that role had he remained in Congress.

But in any case, Cummings will be the Committee Chair and as a historical note, before Gowdy, the previous GOP chair was Issa... And before the 2010 (R) House flip, the previous Democratic Chairs were Henry Waxman and John Dingell (Dingell just prior to Waxman after the 2006 (D) House flip - they had a bit of a tiff and Waxman managed to take that Committee over in 2008 I believe).

Expect demands that democrats mount endless investigations into Nancy Pelosi and Hillary. That's where the real crime is according to Jordan, not his great president.

The republican party has moved further to a cartoon version of a political party
