Espy files to run for Senate in 2020, setting up possible rematch with Hyde-Smith

Source: The Hill

Democrat Mike Espy appears to be gunning for a rematch in his bid for Senate in Mississippi.

The agriculture secretary and congressman filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Friday declaring his intention to run for Senate in 2020.

The filing comes just three days after he was defeated by Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) in a heated runoff election. A spokesperson for Espy's campaign did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment.

Hyde-Smith, who was appointed earlier this year to replace former Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) in the chamber, beat Espy on Tuesday by roughly 8 points.

Other than a boost by a strong up-ticket candidate for Governor, I'm not seeing a likely change in campaign dynamics.

Hyde-Smith's chances in 2020 are honestly better than they were this year. bearsfootball516 Nov 2018 #1
There should be more Dems voting in 2020 than this year. JustABozoOnThisBus Dec 2018 #8

There were likely a lot of Trump-voting republicans who stayed home this last Tuesday. When they come to vote for Trump in 2020, they'll vote straight party and she'll get a lot of votes she didn't get this year.

Democrats were fired up for this runoff, and republican turnout was way down. With Trump at the top of the ballot in 2020, that’ll bring out the Repub vote in a state like Mississippi.

It was tried almost 60 years ago with the Freedom Riders. But the fact that he got 45% of the vote was a big step in the right direction.

Under the Constitution, she has to run in the next Federal Election (2018) and then the Election for that seat (2020)
