UPDATE: Trump to name Dec. 5 a national day of mourning for George H.W. Bush
Source: Washington Post
BUENOS AIRES President Trump plans to attend the Washington funeral of former president George H.W. Bush and is designating next Wednesday a national day of mourning, the White House said Saturday.
Trump, who is traveling here in Argentina for the Group of 20 summit, was notified overnight of Bushs passing. He is planning to speak by phone on Saturday morning with the late presidents son, former president George W. Bush, to offer his condolences on behalf of himself, first lady Melania Trump and the nation, according to a statement from White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
President Trump and the first lady will attend George H.W. Bushs funeral at Washington National Cathedral, Sanders said. A state funeral is being arranged with all of the accompanying support and honors, Sanders said.
In addition, she said Trump will designate Wednesday a national day of mourning.
Trump did not attend the last major funeral in Washington, that of former senator John McCain of Arizona. The president had long feuded with McCain and was not welcome at the services, which were attended by former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Trump also did not attend the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush. Melania Trump did attend that service in Texas, as did the Obamas and (sic).

I expect Mueller wasn't necessarily scheduling anything for that day. In fact, he may wait and leave next week fallow. Remember Mueller is a Republican.

(14,959 posts)days next week already. I think the 5th is the day he gives the judge in the Manafort case the details of his lack of cooperation/new crimes. But I think there is also a hearing having to do with Flynn, and maybe one with Cohen. I don't recall exactly.
Regardless, Mueller doesn't need to disrupt his work for a national day of mourning (if he did, Trump would just declare every day to be a national day of mourning). Mueller just needs to keep his head down and continue working like a pro.
I agree that Trump likely did not pick the day himself based on distraction potential. Because who knows which bad news will be most in need of distraction a whole week in advance when it comes to the sh*t-show that is the Trump admin?

(128,896 posts)and it ended up essentially a dud in terms of "news" or discussion as the hearing was merely the judge setting a sentencing date for some time in March. The end.
And as a note - these "National Days of Mourning" are actual federal holidays (I am a 30+ year retired fed and I went through 3 of them - Nixon, Raygun, Ford) - and stuff is closed down including the courts. They can move the dates of these hearings as necessary (although usually there are emergency court sessions that happen regardless)... And I'm not saying that Mueller will suddenly stop working... But IMHO, he also ain't tacky either and he and his team will just work around it.
And because of this focus on a former President, I doubt very much that some bombshell is gonna hit next week in the middle of the pomp and circumstance that will come. McCain's funeral was just a drop in the bucket compared to when it is done for a former President (the last one was 2006 with Gerald Ford).

(128,896 posts)I know that and you know that, but their fucking "We know all and nothing came before us" arrogance would be to not bother with that pesky protocol.... until shamed into it.

Every time something is done "for the good of the country" it's really for the good of the powers that be.
