WASHINGTON (Reuters) - White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on Monday the United States will end subsidies for electric cars and other items including renewable energy sources.
Asked about actions planned after General Motors announced U.S. plant closings and layoffs last week, Kudlow said he expected subsidies for buying electric cars will end in 2020 or 2021. Kudlow said the Trump administration will end other subsidies, including on renewables.

(4,136 posts)Giving a $7500 tax credit for buying a $100,000 Tesla Model S always seemed a bit ridiculous. But keeping the subsidies for the lower priced cars like the Volt, Bolt, etc is a no-brainer. I believe the tax credits on Toyotas have been substantially reduced because they start to phase out after a certain number have been sold and Toyota is way over that threshold.
Ending the subsidies on renewables would benefit them if the implied subsidies on coal, oil, and natural gas were also removed.

(10,887 posts)One of the reasons we're seeing more electric cars from other manufacturers is because Tesla has become successful. Despite being expensive, they have shown electric cars really can be practical.
On top of that, they are an American company. It's nice to see those subsidies going to support US technology and workers.

So they are not just for the wealthy. (Used ones would of course be less, but I don't know how much of a market there is in that)
Here are some of the EV's (they don't cover the economics vs. gasoline cars in this article)

(50,530 posts)And as someone else said, giving a $7500 tax break to the purchaser of a $100,000 Tesla is not such a great thing. I kinda wish they would have spent the money a little differently: instead of giving each rich person who buys one of these cars $7500, take $10 million and divide it among 10 fine engineering universities to create better and less expensive electric cars and batteries for them.

(9,895 posts)Or substitute any other ludicrous headline bullet you can think of...we have officially gone through the looking glass and into Wonderland at this point...
For anyone doubting whether or not we would have climate armageddon in the 21st century, wonder no longer...billions are going to die and those alive today WILL live to see it happen. Just as no one in the roaring twenties envisioned the Crash and Depression, so too we have far too many people today that are unable to recognize the peril of the current situation.
We are well and truly fucked. To future generations, toiling in abject misery and trying to survive, I am sorry I was powerless to do more...I tried, I failed.

Experts say the White House cannot change the cap unilaterally. U.S. President Donald Trump last week threatened to eliminate subsidies for GM in retaliation for the companys decision.
Kudlow made clear any changes in subsidies would not just affect GM. I think legally you just cant, he said.
