One survivor has been rescued by Japanese search teams but the six others remain missing.
US media say the two planes crashed during mid-air refuelling but this has not been officially confirmed.
The Marine Corps tweeted that the incident occurred at about 02:00 on Thursday (17:00 GMT Wednesday).
There were five personnel on the C-130 and two on the F-18.

Update: One Marine was rescued and was "in fair condition", while another one "has been declared deceased", Marines officials said in a statement.
Note: Original BBC title was "Rescue mission in Japan after 'mishap' involving two Marine aircraft" but was edited 4 hours ago. Mishap was how the US Marines first described it in a tweet before fatality was confirmed.

TOKYO Two U.S. Marines were rescued from the ocean Thursday but five remain missing after a fighter jet and a refueling plane collided in midair off the coast of Japan, Japanese and American officials said.
Japans Defense Ministry said its maritime forces had found two Marines, both of whom have been transferred to the U.S. military to receive medical care. It has dispatched planes and ships to continue the search and rescue effort.
The Marine Corps initially said a mishap had taken place at 2 a.m. local time during an exercise about 200 miles off the Japanese coast, involving a F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet and a KC-130 Hercules, adding that the circumstances were under investigation. Officials later confirmed the collision occurred during refueling.
The first Marine was found soon after the incident and taken back to his base at the Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southern Japan, where he was receiving medical care and is in a stable condition, the Marines said.

SOP states that the OP will use the title of the article as written.
The OP title does not match BBC article and it appears to inject opinion - Insinuate a cover up or other malfeasance with apostrophes around "Mishap"

(54,255 posts)Outside of actual combat, night air-to-air refueling while dodging thunderstorms is the riskiest thing you can do in an airplane.
IMHO
Once I had two of aircraft in my four ship flight collide as we were joining on the tanker.
Both pilots survived.
Another time the flight leader pulled in too close to the tanker, put a big kink in the refueling hose, and ripped the steel refueling boom off of his left wing.
Refueling was always exciting.

(54,255 posts)This show both the probe and drogue system and the boom-receptacle method.
20 minute film. The really relevant stuff starts about 9 minutes in.
My aircraft (F-84) used the probe and drugue system. The basket is about the size of a basketball hoop.
Takes a steady hand.
