Former Miss Kentucky charged with sending nude photos to 15-year-old ex-student
Source: Washington Post
Ramsey Bearse has long been accustomed to appearing before an audience.
She was entranced by the sound of the fiddle as a teenager and soon jumped in with older musicians at bluegrass joints in Kentucky, crafting a stage persona with a trademark instrument.
I have been known as the Girl with the Green Fiddle a lot longer than Ive been known as Miss Kentucky, Bearse said in 2014 during the preliminary competitions for Miss America.
But on Friday, Bearse, now a middle school science teacher outside Charleston, W.Va., appeared before an audience of one a magistrate judge who read four felony counts accusing her of sending nude photos of herself to a 15-year-old former student over Snapchat.
Bearse admitted to sending the photos to the male student after his parents alerted authorities, the Associated Press reported, citing court documents. She had been the students teacher for part of his time at Andrew Jackson Middle School, the AP reported.

I wonder if the MS affected her thinking and impulse control.

(58,724 posts)Do you think a more severe punishment would be warranted if this had been a current student of hers?. This article says that it was a former student. Also, do you think she should get jail time in addition to having her teaching license suspended or revoked?

I can certainly understand your desire to engage (again) in reductio ad absurdum... as long as you're aware that it reflects on you alone and no one else..

So, when you make a statement that sounds very much like "he probably liked it", regardless of your intent, it come off as though you are mitigating her action.
I'm obviously not the only one who interpreted like that. So, if that's not your intent, then, again, I think you are expressing yourself poorly.
At the very least, perhaps you could take this as a study in how people misinterpret innocent comments.

(4,066 posts)The comment "You don't think teenage boys appreciate those sorts of images?" is an example of how we think of males differently than females. It is sexist in the most obvious way.
The implication from that comment is that since all males are lusty animals, unable to control their physical desires it couldn't possibly be offensive for a woman to send nude pictures to a male. The logic is that all males love to see naked females. That all males want to have sex with the nude female who sends them a pic.
That is wrong. That is sexist. It makes the very case of every woman who describes men as pigs.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)The assertion I am making is that lots of teenage boys appreciate looking at topless images of attractive females (just like lots of adults do - as the poster to whom I responded suggested).
That this could conceivably be construed as "a sexist load of shit" is bizarre (as are all of the disturbing inferences you drew from such a benign assertion).
LiberalLovinLug
(14,165 posts)That all males want to have sex with the nude female who sends them a pic"
Uh....pretty much. And especially 15 year old boys. I was one too. Obviously talking about hetro males here. Which I'm sure he was, or that is a totally different conversation.
If this were a male teacher and a 15 year old female ex student, it would be just as legally wrong. Both are wrong and she should have known better. But why do we deny that it would be very different for the victim.
These cases are funny to process, because this is a case where it really is quite different FOR THE VICTIM depending on the sexes involved. Something rarely discussed on the MSM. A bunch of factors. Females are the weaker physically gender, and might feel more pressured. They have been also taught through media that males, especially authority figures, are to be obeyed, and looked up to, at least more than males are towards females. Males are taught by their peers to be promiscuous, to be flattered if an attractive female pays you attention. And yes, nudie pics of your hot teacher would not be unwelcome lets just say. At least for 99% of hetro males. It would be a rare bird who would have some kind of serious psychological problems later for seeing these pics, and for being singled out by an attractive older woman for sexual attention.
I just think its one of those odd, unexplored social quandaries. The only negative I see for the male from this kind of experience is getting a bigger ego and developing into a prick that thinks he can grab a .........whenever he wants.
I just feel for the female teacher in these cases. She made a wrong rash, decision in the heat of the moment so to speak. But the sentence seems so harsh compared to the damage done. and while I understand the need to have a punishment for this kind of crime, it just seems abhorrent that she might get a long prison sentence for something that the "victim" is probably bragging to his friends about and getting high fives.

(146,262 posts)Do you think teenage girls appreciate dick pictures?
I think your question is disturbing, frankly. Adults who send nude photos of themselves to children of whatever age are simply 100% wrong to do so. It doesn't matter what sex the sender or the recipient is. It is just flat wrong.
I was once a 15 year old boy. While I "appreciated" looking at Playboy centerfolds, I would not have appreciated getting a nude photo from a female teacher. I would have found it very weird and disturbing.
Think, oberliner, before writing. That's my advice to you.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)I was responding to that by asking if that poster didn't think that any teenage boys would appreciate such images.
MineralMan
(146,262 posts)Really. The boy is not the issue in any way, nor is his appreciation nor anything else about him.
You wrote what you wrote. You needn't have written anything, but you did.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)I have no idea what point you are making. There is no comment from me about the boy being an issue in any way.
My assertion is that teenagers and adults are capable of appreciating such images. The comment to which I responded seemed to suggest that only adults were.
Try not to impose things onto comments and posts that aren't actually there.

(1,580 posts)Think about how WRONG your statement is. Indict an entire profession over what is really a VERY small number of such cases in a HUGE country of 320 million people? Should we indict the entire entertainment industry because of a small number of sexual abuse/harassment cases splashed in the media? Should be indict the entire medical profession for the same reason? "Gee, seems like a lot of doctors get in trouble for sexual abuse. What's wrong with that profession? Are standards so low?" See how WRONG an assertion that is?
There are no more sexual abusers in education than in any other field. It's just that in certain professions like education and medicine and entertainment the MEDIA splashes them all over the place because they generate bigger headlines and sell more papers.
You are unfortunately a victim of media sensationalism and your perception has been molded by it. I suggest using more critical thinking.
** Also, just to note, in my state a female teacher last year was accused of having an affair with a student, was fired, charged, put on trial, and ACQUITTED! All evidence pointed to the student having made it all up. The jury quickly acquitted her of ALL charges involved in the case. In some cases not everyone charged with this stuff is actually guilty. **

15-years-old and a former student, she's crazy to do this... I can think of how it could have happened. Maybe he found photos of her on the Internet. Maybe she did nude photos, professionally. She could have sent back a nude favorite with certain areas hidden... still nude, but you could see as much on the beach.
Still, this shows lack of judgement as a teacher... she really needs to be doing something else.
Today, a 15-year-old is going to see all the nude photos he (or she) wants. We see nude pictures of Melania Trump all the time, and she's the First lady of the United States. What I'd look at is the teacher's motivation
is the teacher a predator? Was the sending an invitation for sex? Has the teacher sent pictures to other 15-year-olds?

(20,867 posts)I have MS and I do not believe that my thinking and impulse control is affected by this crappy illness.
It has taken far more from me that YOU could ever possibly imagine.
Furthermore, I'd never for a second think that MS could cause a woman to act this way.
She's a beauty queen, something I am not either. She likely has a lot of narcissistic ideation, that is what I tend to think.
Perhaps you should try to nail her with some other *rational* reason for her behavior and skip on the MS as being the reason.
