LONDON (AP) With a crucial parliamentary vote on Brexit looming, British Prime Minister Theresa May warned lawmakers Sunday that they could take Britain into uncharted waters and trigger a general election if they reject the divorce deal she struck with the European Union.
May is fighting to save her unpopular Brexit plan and her job ahead of a showdown in Parliament on Tuesday, when lawmakers are widely expected to vote down the deal she negotiated with Brussels. Her Downing Street office insisted that the vote will go ahead despite speculation that the government may be forced to delay it.
A defeat in the vote could see Britain crashing out of the EU on March 29, the date for Britains exit, with no deal in place an outcome that could spell economic chaos.
In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, May said rejecting her deal would mean grave uncertainty for the nation with a very real risk of no Brexit or leaving the European Union with no deal.

(101,295 posts)It's true a hard Brexit would be unchartered waters, and really bad for the economy, plus the Irish border; so would Parliament deciding to stop Brexit, as would having another referendum to ask about stopping it (both of those would infuriate a large number of Leave voters). And the EU has said they won't re-open negotiations - perhaps the most 'charted' option would be persuading them to re-open them after all. But that means the British parliament throwing itself on the mercy of the EU - just what Leave voters didn't want.

(1,318 posts)...when you decided that the election results had to represent the will of your citizenry. Everything since then has been a consequence of that choice you made.
At any time you could step up and decide that Brexit is not in the best interests of your country... if you really stand for the best interests of your country. It appears that you don't have the courage to do so.

(50,836 posts)Haven't the circumstances shown that 1) there was interference by outside sources, and 2) many of the British people have changed their minds about the vote? If so, shouldn't they either 1) scrap the Brexit, or 2) vote on it again?

(20,165 posts)That being said, it was stupid to put themselves in this situation to begin with. Imagine if we had a binding referendum in the US for lowering income taxes. It would pass, and THEN everyone would find out what a shitstorm it would cause.

(26,277 posts)the EU which Russia wants because it probably has its eyes on grabbing more territory from its neighbors which having a strong EU would make more difficult.
