UK can halt Brexit unilaterally, EU court rules

Source: DW

The EU's top court ruled Monday that the United Kingdom could stop its plan to exit the European Union unilaterally without other member states having to approve the decision. The ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) comes a day before British lawmakers are due to vote on Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal, with MPs expected to reject the proposals.

"The United Kingdom is free to revoke unilaterally the notification of its intention to withdraw from the EU," the ECJ said. It explained that the option of reversing Brexit "exists for as long as a withdrawal agreement concluded between the EU and that member state has not entered into force..." or "for as long as the two-year period from the date of the notification of the intention to withdraw from the EU..."

UK Environment Secretary Michael Gove, who is in favor of Brexit, told BBC radio that "we don't want to stay in the EU." He added that "this case is very well but it doesn't alter the referendum vote or the clear intention of the government that we leave on March 29."

1. Stay. A majority of younger people favor stay. They'll have to live with it either way.

If they held another BrExit referendum today, it would fail. A majority do not want BrExit and the proportion is higher among young people.

May is trying to preserve her and her party's power on the backs of an ideological stance that makes little sense except as a power ploy.

5. I'm afraid, 'we' (the UK population) have not been offered a second chance.

A second chance can only be achieved with a second referendum. The RWNJ Tories, baying for Brexit at all costs, are absolutely determined there will be no second ref. See Gove's quote.

In which case, the ECJ ruling is pretty meaningless.

Protests estimated close to a million strong in London, plus many others.

The Nut Jobs just go into broken record mode. 'We have had the referendum, we are leaving' - end of.

The fight goes on, but the 1%ers hold all the power - and they ain't budging! They are refusing a 2nd ref because they 'know' they'll likely/certainly lose. 2016 was their last realistic chance of victory, demographic changes in last 2-1/2 years - 10% of leave voters have died, 23% more youngsters (generally pro-EU) have come of voting age. That's why they are Hell-bent on preventing a new vote.

It doesn't help that our Leader of The 'Opposition' is also anti-EU.

I/we won't give up, but it's looking bad.

Best of luck with forcing a second referendum. As long as you don't vote to accept the Euro, maybe the "nut jobs" will allow it.

.. the vote on the deal has been postponed - that could lead to several different outcomes. Whichever way that goes Parliament will not allow a no deal Brexit. So if we are not having no deal, May's deal cannot get through then in the short term staying is the only viable solution. If the right wing of the Tories tries a coup - then Parliament will force a vote of no confidence (which they would win), and we would have dissolution of Parliament rather than allow a few extremists to get their own way. Fucking hell we had swastika's being waved in that march today - other than the most ardent of nasty - no-one wants to see that. Things are going to be tough - the interesting thing about the ruling today is that we do not need a second referendum to stay in...... Parliament can just decide. You know the right wing are nervous. IDS was on Pinnears Politics yesterday basically saying if Brexit does not go through in March (as in no deal Brexit) there will be riots in the streets aka Paris. Utter bollocks of course - project fear is now underway because they feel Brexit slipping through their sweaty little right wing palms!

Just my take and maybe I am being overally optimistic or too much in the London bubble - but I don't think so
