Ohio Senate passes 'heartbeat bill,' hoping abortion ban will be used to overturn Roe

Source: Think Progress

"We literally crafted this legislation to be the arrow in the heart of Roe v. Wade."

The anti-abortion movement has become more emboldened since the Trump administration was able to appoint two Supreme Court justices, paving the way for the new conservative federal bench to potentially overturn Roe v. Wade.

Indeed, in an 18-13 vote Wednesday, the Ohio Senate passed the so-called "heartbeat bill," banning abortions after providers can detect a fetal heartbeat -- which could be as early as six weeks, before many people even know they're pregnant.

The House first passed the "heartbeat bill" in November, but a Senate committee amended the measure to clarify that officials would not be required to use a trans-vaginal ultrasound to detect the heartbeat. Providers could instead use an abdominal ultrasound, which detects the fetal heartbeat a few weeks later, usually around 11 weeks. Either way, the bill is a clear attempt by Ohio lawmakers to ban abortions before the fetus is viable. When talking about a fetus, the word "heartbeat" isn't medically accurate, as it's not a fully formed heart.

The measure now heads back to the House before heading to the desk of Gov. John Kasich (R). Kasich vetoed the measure before in 2016, but the lame-duck legislature is unfazed. Legislators have enough votes to override a veto, and they could always vote on the bill again next year after Gov.-elect Mike DeWine (R) takes office, as he said he supports the ban.

Which basically would state that old fat white men can't make decisions affecting women. Everyone good with that?

When you have Republicans in every statewide office plus a mjority in both state houses this is to be expected. So glad I live in one of the blue areas in Ohio.

to purchase ships, with medical staff on board, and then women can have procedures done on international waters. I think it was Ireland that had to do this crap for years.

Of course, the real rich will not have a problem having an abortion done.

Does the baby worshippers understand that we will be less "white" even faster, if this stupid bill becomes law. Does anyone, ever think ahead?

Almost 80% of the country is pro-choice. And the younger generations are squarely pro-choice.

Yet, here we are - almost 2019 - and the religious right (which is neither) is STILL obsessed with being able to hold the authority of controlling what a woman does with her body. It's none of your fucking business, fundies. N O N E. This is the ONE SINGLE issue that keeps these people supporting the republicans; they still believe that the GOP (fill in your own interpretation of what that means), will fight to the death to support this. They won't. But because it keeps these mentally-deranged zealots happy and voting R, they will keep up the appearance of trying.

The Supremes are not going to touch this. Overturning Roe v. Wade would set a dangerous precedent.

FFS, I am so tired of this.
