Michigan pastor charged in shooting death of transgender woman

Source: CBS News

21M AGO / CBS/AP

Authorities say the transgender status of a woman played a role in her fatal shooting in Detroit. Albert Weathers of Sterling Heights was charged Monday with murder in the death of Kelly Stough, 36, who was found dead by a police officer on a Detroit street Friday. Weathers' lawyer, David Cripps, told CBS News that Weathers is a local pastor and maintains his innocence.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says evidence about how Stough's transgender status was relevant to the case will be presented in court. A probable cause hearing was scheduled for Dec. 20. Spokeswoman Maria Miller declined to comment further about the circumstances of the shooting or whether the victim and the suspect knew each other.

The office said they've assigned the case to a special prosecutor with the Fair Michigan Justice Project, a collaboration between the prosecutor's office and the Fair Michigan Foundation, a group committed to equal protection for gay, lesbian and transgender residents. The Fair Michigan Justice Project aims to help law enforcement and prosecutors in the state solve serious crimes against LGBTQ individuals.

Fair Michigan president Dana Nessel, who was recently elected as Michigan's next attorney general, says the case reflects the "excessive brutality" faced by members of Detroit's transgender community.

And was scared that it would come to light, so he murdered her.

Just a guess, could be wrong.

And possibly this was self hate and loathing.

Live and let live, do unto others etc.....that should be a big ideal of any institution, especially Churches.

Hope they throw the book at him.

I don't know if he is transgender or just likes to wear pretty clothes. He is 8 years old. The worse part of this is he lives in rural Alabama, not the best place for him to live. His mother is fine with the way he is, it is the rest of the family I have that has a problem with him. He wanted to spend last Summer with us, but the family said he would have to wear boys clothes outside the house. I told them that when he went outside or to a movie etc. I would take him and he would wear what ever he wanted to. They gave his mother so much grief that he stayed home. Our 11 year old great-grandson that we are raising was really pissed at the family because he loves his 1/2 brother. Maybe I will just take him to Alabama next Summer.
