House passes spending bill with border wall money -- setting up shutdown stalemate with Senate

Source: CNBC

The House passed a temporary spending bill Thursday with money for President Donald Trump's proposed border wall, further muddying the scramble to dodge a partial government shutdown by Friday.

The chamber approved the measure in a 217-185 vote. But the path forward now is murky. The bill likely will not clear the Senate because it includes more than $5 billion for the border barrier, increasing the chances that funding for seven agencies lapses after the midnight Friday deadline.

Senators were told Thursday to prepare for potential votes Friday. The chamber convenes at noon.

The Senate unanimously approved a bill Wednesday night to keep the government running through Feb. 8 — without border wall money. Trump insisted Thursday that he would not sign it. It forced House Republicans to include the wall money in the new bill.

House Republicans have voted to approve a bill to fund President Donald Trump’s $5 billion demand for border wall, setting up a final showdown in the Senate ahead of Friday’s deadline to avert a government shutdown.

The vote received no Democratic support, and the bill’s prospects in the Senate are dim as Democrats have pledged to defeat the divisive measure.

The final tally was 217-185, with eight Republicans voting against the package.

There were several votes this evening.

Perhaps it was this one that immediately followed.

7:58:15 P.M. H.R. 6602 Considered as unfinished business. H.R. 6602 — "To reauthorize the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail Route, and for other purposes."

8:06:26 P.M. H.R. 6602 On motion to suspend the rules and pass the bill Agreed to by recorded vote (2/3 required): 382 - 9 (Roll no. 473).

Faced with an inability to get cloture, will Senate Majority Leader McYurtle declare a new procedural rule eliminating the filibuster in cases of “funding matters of vital national security”…? I wouldn’t put it past him. God knows, the Republicans managing to ram the wall through would endear them to Trump’s base, and might be the only way 45 might hope to win re-election.

So maybe the House should ask Mexico to pay for the rest

Trump will not be blocked from flying (nor will anyone else) if there is a shutdown. The pilots, controllers, and other staff just have to work without pay as Trump tells them Merry Christmas.
