With an exclamatory tweet early Friday, President Donald Trump restated his willingness to undertake a partial government shutdown — cutting off funding for the Department of Homeland Security and other departments, agencies and federal programs — if Congress does not allocate $5 billion or more to the construction of a wall, or “steel slats,” at the southern border in a continuing resolution that, if the shutdown is to be averted, requires passage by midnight:

Less than two days ago, a bipartisan agreement was reportedly in place to fund the government at currently budgeted levels through Feb. 8, carrying official Washington and its employees and constituents through the year-end holidays and the congressional recess. Trump, having heard from hard liners in the conservative media that the wall was nonnegotiable and that, with Democrats taking control of the House in January, this was a final opportunity, withdrew his expressed support for such legislation early Thursday.

they deliberately chose holiday times because people take time off. But there are many consequences they don't think about, like the civilian support staff for our military and law enforcement won't be able to work, which leaves America vulnerable. It also screws up planning and prep work for many contracts and projects scheduled to start in January.
