Trump Makes Another Call to Build 'A Great Steel Barrier or Wall' as Shutdown Negotiations Continue

Source: Mediaite

by Josh Feldman | Dec 22nd, 2018, 3:23 pm

President Donald Trump met with Republicans for a lunch this afternoon discussing border security, and following that lunch he tweeted once again his demand for a wall on the border.

Or at least a “great Steel Barrier”:

In the past few days, Trump has talked several times about “beautiful steel slats” at the border, even sharing a crude illustration last night of what he’s envisioning.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said earlier this afternoon to the President that if he wants to end the shutdown, he needs to “abandon the wall.”

He says that wind turbines are ugly but continues to say all his wall ideas are beautiful.

minutes so if he said turbines were ugly to one crowd you can be certain there was a crowd he told they were just fine.

14. Borders are just imaginary lines

Borders are just imaginary lines drawn up by arrogant people. The Roman Empire had borders - where are they now? We all bleed red. What happened to the U.S. that allowed everyone who arrived to Ellis Island to become part of our country? We need to return to that -- anyone who wants to can come and stay here, period. Instead of $5Bn being used to build a wall, have it spent to hire workers to tear down the existing fencing and install permanent water and shelter stations on the border - to protect migrants from sunlight and provide first aid kits, etc.

If our elected officials had even an ounce of compassion, anyone who wants to be here would be allowed to and would be naturalized with no bureaucratic hurdles. Give them a year or two of SNAP, WIC, TANF, Medicaid, and Section 8 as applicable until they land on their feet. This is what a compassionate country would do. Incentivize employers to have supervisors that are fluent in both English and Spanish. Establish both English and Spanish, possibly others as official languages of the U.S. much like French and English are in Canada. Appropriate funding to provide free public translator social workers that are available in every county to assist new immigrants.

Abolish all attempts to restrict the flow of human beings from crossing some imaginary line. End the insanity.

Contraband is going to get in either way, whether it's brought in illegally or walked in through legal migrant means. That's a separate issue, but I'm in favor of legalizing all forms of recreational drugs and taxing them, with common sense regulations as to labelling etc. Price them cheaply so that violent organizations cannot compete because their products will be inferior and more expensive.

If some huge wall is built, then tunnels will be built under it to facilitate smuggling and 'coyote' migrant services. It's all for nought.

It's not about border security

Sounds more like he wants a monument to himself so grandiose that people will still be awed in a thousand years as they gaze upon the ruins

The same thing Nazi architect Speer proposed after they achieved victory for the monuments to themselves and Der Fuehrer. In that example, the goal involved use of both epic scale, and durable materials. The resort to metal spikes, which rust and will be targets for recycling, by the Gropenfuehrer smells of desperation

It's about ego. About some recognition, however dim, of mortality. About leaving something behind that will endure beyond history's ability to record, in painful detail, the shame and inadequacy of both his not-even-attempted administration, and of him personally

As his time nears its end, all that remains is the increasingly desperate drive to leave something, anything, no matter how transient, that leaves a physical reminder (the sole proof in his own mind, that denies records and written history) of his existence

It's not about border security

...but it seems to me that anyone with a cutting torch and a rebar bender (both of which are available off-the-shelf at Herramientas de Carga de Puerto de Tijuana) could make a hole in that thing wide enough to walk about thirty people through before La Migra could notice what was happening.
