Netanyahu will visit president elect Bolsonaro this Friday in Rio
Friday, December 28th 2018 - 09:12 UTC
Israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has left on a historic six-day trip to Brazil, the first ever visit the largest Latin American country made by a sitting premier of the Jewish state. Besides boosting diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries, Netanyahu is scheduled to hold a one-to-one meeting with president-elect Jair Bolsonaro this Friday in Rio de Janeiro.
I am happy that we can open a new era between Israel and this superpower called Brazil, Netanyahu said on his departure.
Meetings with the new heads of the Brazilian foreign and defense ministries have been set, as well as with local Jewish community leaders where he has been tipped to attend a Shabbat synagogue service in Copacabana.
Brazil has a sizeable and influential Evangelical community, whose unwavering support for the State of Israel has likely contributed to Bolsonaros comments on his intentions to move the countrys embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Netanyahu will also meet with Christian Evangelical heads.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet next week in Brazil with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as Washington prepares to withdraw troops from Syria, the State Department said Thursday.
Pompeo and Netanyahu will meet in Brasilia where both will be attending the New Year's Day inauguration of president-elect Jair Bolsonaro, a right-wing firebrand who has vowed to move Brazil closer to Israel and US President Donald Trump.
Netanyahu has met frequently with Pompeo and enjoys a warm relationship with Trump, happy about his withdrawal from a denuclearization deal with Iran and his landmark shift of the US embassy to Jerusalem.
But Netanyahu has for the first time found himself at odds with Trump after the US leader's sudden announcement last week that he will bring home all 2,000 American troops from war-ravaged Syria, where Israel saw Washington's presence as a bulwark against Iran and counterweight to the influence of Russia.
