Majority in poll want Trump impeached or censured

Source: The Hilll

Nearly 60 percent of U.S. voters surveyed say President Trump should be either impeached and removed from office or formally censured, according to a new Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released exclusively to The Hill.

The poll shows that a majority of voters polled think some kind of action should be taken against Trump, though they are divided on how far lawmakers should go as Democrats prepare to take over the House majority.

Asked whether Trump should be impeached and removed from office for his actions, censured by Congress or whether Congress should take no action, 39 percent of respondents said Trump should be impeached and removed from office.

Impeachment would require a majority vote by the House - a possibility with a Democratic majority, though leadership in the party have been cautious on the topic. Conviction in the Senate would require a two-thirds vote, something unlikely in a body that will have 53 Republicans.

Twenty percent of poll respondents said lawmakers should vote to formally censure the president.

pledging their electoral votes to the popular vote winner. Apparently it's just "so much trouble (sigh)" on a national basis. The Republicans were, by all reports, going to raise Holy Hell if the 2000 election had gone the other way (Bush the popular vote and Gore the Electoral College).

39% today. I think it was a lot less a month ago.

A coupe months in to the new House and we might have a majority.

Mueller is done.

It is a judgment on him just to be impeached - just as it was for Bill Clinton -- or censored. The difference is that the majory of the country did not consider Clinton's offenses as deserving impeachment - even as a majority of the House did. Trump's, when laid out, may be so serious that some Republican Senators will be loath to defend him and they do cannot, as the Democrats did in 1999 - have speeches where they used strong words criticizing Clinton, but then explained why it did not rise to high crimes and misdemeanors.

In both the House and the Senate, the reasons for doing either would be discussed in carefully written speeches. (I read most of the Democratic ones on Clinton and they were fascinating.) In both cases, it will mark a point in the administartion where he is held accountable.

If only 39% are for impeachment, Pelosi would never allow it on the Floor because some Democrats would vote against it.

Censure is a victory for trump, and a waste of time.

I’m hoping this poll is an abberation, because the results are disappointing.

In April 1998 - slightly over 6 months before Clinton was impeached in the House, a poll showed only 18% thought he should be impeached Yet he was impeached.

http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1998/04/10/polls/impeachment/

Note he was then still at 67% approval, a level Trump has NEVER reached - not even on Rassmussen!

What good would a "censure" vote do?

(From the OP)
"Twenty percent of poll respondents said lawmakers should vote to formally censure the president....
Forty-one percent of respondents said Congress should take no action against the president, according to the survey of 1,473 registered voters."

So, essentially, this poll finds that 61 percent of Americans do NOT want the bastard impeached!

What a country!

I would take this poll to be that many have already moved to the rare situation of censuring a President. I think of it as a transition state that could be moved to favor impeachment if there was movement to that. I also think many in that category will agree that Trump has already been shown to have done things that are wrong. The Mueller case is not complete and - importantly - much is not public. When that happens AND our leaders are making the case - that they are not making, I suspect that a huge proportion of the "censor" group will switch to impeach. Depending how strong the case is, he might actually be removed.

Censure: "Stronger than a simple rebuke, but not as strong as expulsion."

In politics, it's "a form of public shaming in which the politician must stand before his peers to listen to the censure resolution"

And then Tronald J Dump will become NOT a collusiony firestorm of fecal matter raining down on our nation?
