Hawaii Senator To Donate Salary Earned During Shutdown
Source: Newsweek
A U.S. senator has pledged to donate the salary earned during the government shutdown to food banks.
Unlike hundreds of thousands of federal workers who are either furloughed of working without pay since the partial government shutdown came into effect on Friday, members of Congress are getting paid as usual.
For that reason, U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii said she would donate whatever amount she receives during the shutdown to food banks across the state. "More than 2,500 federal workers in Hawaii are either furloughed or working without pay during the holidays because Donald Trump shut down the government, Hirono was quoted as saying by Hawaii News Now.
As long as Donald Trump refuses to re-open the government, I will be donating my salary to Hawaiis food bankswho serve nearly one in eight Hawaii residents in need. The 71-year-old is not new to this kind of gesture, having previously donated her earnings during the government shutdowns in 2013 and January this year. -MORE...

As a Fed who is working without pay, it must be nice to have the CHOICE. The decision to forgo pay was made for me. How about we stop paying Congress during a shutdown and give their pay to out-of-work employees.

(24,324 posts)Ever notice how in so many articles about anything, the actually information alluded to in the title, not only isn't given in the title, but is never given for a couple paragraphs?
Even in the title, I mean, why don;t they just say, "US Senator Mazie Hirono has pledged to donate the salary earned during the government shutdown to food banks. ?"
Eh, we know why...

(767 posts)The fact that republicans ain't Christians is nothing new to me. They do their masters bidding and hurt people whenever they can as GOP agents. They are over paid representatives who have no care of helping people who voted for them in the past. They have their "own" life to live. I remember when democrats tried to tie their wages into shut down periods. No pay when the government shuts down. !00% GOP voted against this bold policy because it would "hurt" them in the wallet. They are truly selfish people to the core.......
