Neighbors Say There's No 10-Foot Wall Outside Obama's House

Last edited Mon Dec 31, 2018, 05:55 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: The Hill

30 mins. ago. Neighbors of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have disputed President Trump's recent claim that a 10-foot wall stands around the Obama home in Washington, D.C.

Two neighbors in remarks to The Washington Post disputed Trump's characterization. "There's a fence that goes along the front of the house, but it's the same as the other neighbors have. It's tastefully done," one neighbor, who was kept anonymous, told the newspaper.

Another neighbor also told the Post that the home is completely visible from the street "There is no 10-foot wall in the front, back or sides of the house - and no wall is going up," the neighbor said.

Trump on Sunday wrote in a tweet that a "wall" around the Obamas' home is the "same thing" that the U.S. needs on its southern border.

Perhaps a 7-ft. wrought-iron and brick security fence with automated gate. Many movie stars and big business characters have much more fortification and far less visibility. I'm proud of the Obamas for maintaining that degree of visibility.

That sends a message to America: "we're still available to you!"......

Mon Dec 31, 2018, 04:54 PM
Dec 2018

because they planned to stay only as long as their daughters finish school in the DC area. Did I hear that right?

The point is that very few renters put up fences around the houses they rent. If there is a fence of some sort, it would have been there before the Obamas moved in.

Here I go again - trying to make some sort of sense around a chumpy pronouncement.

It was put up by the Obamas. They had to get a variance in order to do it, according to one report.

It is not solid, and appears to be about 8' high (based on people standing next to the brick pillars that hold the wroghtt iron/steel fence.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4095126/Workers-seen-building-wall-Obamas-new-Washington-DC-home.html

I haven't been able to find any photos of it completed (and Google blurs their house - likely for security reasons)

It's a typical right-wing Brit tabloid. Not owned by Murdoch, but not much different. Strong backer of the Tories and UKIP. According to Wikipedia: "The Daily Mail has been widely criticised for its unreliability, as well as printing of sensationalist and inaccurate scare stories of science and medical research, and for copyright violations."

Personally, I'm surprised there isn't a solid wall around the Obamas' place. I would think all former presidents would need that form of protection against crazies who might want to settle scores, even after they've left office. I can't help but think that that enormous window in front would be a magnet to the AR-15-toting InfoWars crowd.

54. That was the least obnoxious source I could find for pictures.
Mon Dec 31, 2018, 07:25 PM

Believe me, I tried to find a more neutral source. It may well be that more reputable sources decided not to post current images for security reasons (especially since it's not a full wall). If the crazies have to drive there in order to even plan an attack, there is a potential they will be spotted scoping out the place, or recognized by on-the-ball secret service when they return.

Your second paragraph is precisely the reason Trump's analogy is a failure. There are actually crazies who have made numerous death threats against the Obamas - so building a barrier makes good sense. In contrast, our home-grown crazies are more dangerous than the people Trump is trying to keep out, not to mention that physical barriers work best to protect a specific, narrow, target than they do to divide people.

There are times newspapers withhold photographs/parts of stories/etc. for security reasons. This may be one of those times- I was just providing a possible rationale in response to a question asked.

If you go to Google maps (not a newspaper - but related thinking about security) youwill discover that the view in the area of the Obama's home is distorted. Last night when I looked, from the street view, the street view of the home was distorted. This morning the view is clear - but it is the pre-Obama view of the house.

The wall in post 17 is approximately the same height - I don't really care whether it is 8' or 10', or whether anyone has a wall around their home or not.

As I've repeatedly told you - my beef is with our side using old photos that expressly or by implication misrepresent what they are in order to prove a political point. Trump is vile and a liar - we shouldn't be imitating his lying to prove he's vile.

Not sure it’s the same thing. Let’s say it did have a 10’ wall around it, it would not have been due to the Obamas request and much more likely to have been a security requirement of the SS.

Physical security is not really up to them but I’m sure they have some input though.

I can only imagine the level of abuse that trump will hoist on them if he doesn’t get impeached.

Thought technically a wall, a retaining wall is to stop the terrain from shifting and soil sliding down, and isn't tall. But those are details.

He just sends out these whistle calls to his base, who are uneducated and uninformed, and will repeat anything he says. Like "lock her up!" Even though they don't know what it means, or the details, or even care if it's true.
