School Refuses To Play Sports At Karen Pence's School Due To Its Anti-LGBTQ Policy
Source: Newsweek
A school in Washington, D.C., said it would not play any sports at the school where Karen Pence teaches because of its policy against LGBTQ students. The Sheridan School headmaster, Jessica Donovan, wrote in a letter to parents that the school had decided not to play any sports games at the Immanuel Christian School because of its policy of not admitting LGBTQ students.
In the letter reviewed by Newsweek, Donovan wrote that the school had several discussions with school officials, faculty members and students about playing sports games at the schools. Donovan wrote that her school had played the Immanuel Christian School in the past, not knowing about its anti-LGBTQ policies. She said that the majority of students wanted to play against the school and would wear rainbow-colored socks to support the LGBTQ community, but some students felt unsafe entering the school.
As we talked more, we understood that some students did not feel safe entering a school that bans LGBTQ parents, students or even families that support LGBTQ rights. Forcing our children to choose between an environment in which they feel unsafe or staying home was not an option. So we decided that we would invite ICS to play all of the games at Sheridan, the letter read. Since ICS declined our offer to host, we will only play our home games and will not go to ICS to play.
Karen Pence announced she was returning to the Immanuel Christian School to teach art. She received backlash surrounding her decision to teach at the Christian school. Pences spokeswoman, Kara Brooks, said in a statement that Pence had worked for the school for 12 years before she and her husband, Vice President Mike Pence, began working at the White House. Its absurd that her decision to teach art to children at a Christian school, and the schools religious beliefs, are under attack, Brooks previously said.

(1,652 posts)She is just teaching art. You are right, I looked it up and she does not have an art therapy license. But she is on the board of an art therapy organization and advocates for art therapy. Its her signature cause, and not all art therapists are happy about it. She probably does not have an art teaching license either. But there are plenty of private schools that are not bigoted. She is deliberately sending a message of bigotry to the whole world.

How far can we be pushed into depravity like that evinced by the Pences and trumpfs and the few remaining repuglicons?
Maybe some PhD sociology experiment run amok? Incite people to do things that no sentient/caring person would ever do?
Where is the off switch?

(14,490 posts)I don't feel this is the healthiest move for the children's development and growth.
This sort of move just encourages further divisiveness between cultural groups and teaches children to be xenophobic. This is an adult belief structure enforced by one school relating to admissions and these adults must learn the errors of their ways, but not by punishing children.
The kids of both schools need exposure to the many aspects of diversity, but can't do that if they're locked up in their own cultural bubbles.
Let's instead find grown-up ways to send a clear message to Immanuel Christian School and others that enshrine backwards beliefs of any sort into their administrative policy.

(1,533 posts)She should be marginalized for her bat shit ideas as well, but the school had the policies before this year. They should have been shunned by all other schools before this. If these schools can only find similar schools to participate, the long drives will reduce their ability to recruit parents.

(1,533 posts)Who is accepting bigotry? The school should have been ostracized long before now because of their policies. Great that it is happening now because the horrible 2nd lady got a part time gig there, but the school sucked before she got there. Sucks more now that she is there.
