President Donald Trump on Friday said there is a “a good chance” he will declare a national emergency at the southern border to unlock Defense Department dollars for a wall, and signaled he may announce it during his State of the Union address Tuesday.

“I think there’s a good chance we’ll have to do that,” Trump said of a coming emergency declaration, which Democrats and pro-immigration groups have said would be met with an immediate legal challenge.

“We will be looking at a national emergency because I don't think anything is going to happen,” Trump said of the House-Senate panel’s negotiations.

Real presidents don't tease national emergencies.

Lets look at the definition of emergency: a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.

He had control of both houses of Congress (and yes, he was in control -- with the exception of McCain, Collins and Murcowski, not a single Republican would challenge his insane ideas) under the exact same conditions at the border, and the exact same promise he had made to the base, and all of a sudden it's an emergency? Bullshit. All he's trying to do is demonstrate his dominance in the new political order of things. What he doesn't recognize is the Founding Fathers foresaw such a power grab, and organized the government into three co-equal branches of government, any two of which could provide a check against the third. Despite having Moscow Mitch in his pocket, the House is where appropriations begin, so that's one check. Claiming an emergency exists where there is on unexpected circumstance can be reviewed by the courts, and absent the fact that there are now five conservative justices -- two of which are Trump loyalists -- the judiciary should provide the second check.

Of course, even if he is stopped by Congress and the courts, he will still say he won, because that's what he does, and as we all know, he's the ultimate victim, as are his followers.

My bet is on his making the declaration at the SOTU. Let's hope Stacey Abrams' post-SOTU response includes announcing that in the few minutes between Trump's declaration and her address a challenge has been filed with a federal court which has granted an immediate temporary injunction on Trump's actions.

That would totally take the wind out of Donnie Two Scoops' "dramatic" announcement. The news after his speech will be about how Pelosi outfoxed him again.
