Beto O'Rourke to join anti-wall march in El Paso as Trump holds a rally for it one mile away

Source: Washington Post

By Amy B Wang February 9 at 4:11 PM

On Monday, President Trump will hold his first campaign rally of the year at the El Paso County Coliseum, a Texas arena within a stone’s throw of the U.S.-Mexico border.

. . .

Former Democratic congressman Beto O’Rourke will appear at the “March for Truth” — at a local high school a mile away from the coliseum — in the hopes of countering Trump’s anti-illegal immigration message.

“The President is coming to El Paso Monday. He will promise a wall and will repeat his lies about the dangers that immigrants pose,” O’Rourke wrote Friday on Medium, an online publishing platform that has seen quite the activity this week.

. . .

“Trump’s fixation on a border wall and his distortions of life in El Paso and along the border are unacceptable,” march organizers wrote on a Facebook page for the event. “Our communities will always stand to include immigrants, oppose racism, and defend the truth. All of us must make a choice about whether we stand up for the truth or allow Trump to degrade our dignity and rights.”

A New Administration. A New Era. But That Cake Looks Familiar.

. . .

The inaugural cake quickly became a punch line on Twitter, a mock controversy with the hashtag #cakegate. And it was another intellectual property mishap, however small, connected to Mr. Trump. Earlier that day, Mr. Trump’s takeover of the @POTUS Twitter account included a stock image from Mr. Obama’s first inauguration that was used as its background.

The inauguration committee did not respond to an immediate request for comment.

A spokeswoman for Tiffany MacIsaac, the owner of Buttercream Bakeshop, said that some of the planners for the Armed Services ball approached the shop with a picture of the cake Mr. Goldman had made. The cake was largely for show, the spokeswoman said; it was made mostly of plastic foam, except for a portion at the bottom.

Buttercream Bakeshop donated its proceeds from the cake to the Human Rights Campaign, one of the nation’s largest L.G.B.T. civil rights advocacy groups and one of the bakery’s favorite charities.

.. and his history and closeness to it is one big reason I still hope he will run in 2020. This is Trump's signature issue, but Beto is uniquely qualified to destroy him on it.

Wear white, bring a positive poster and join us for a peaceful and vocal Celebration.

Monday February 11, El Pasoans, led by Border Network for Human Rights, Women’s March El Paso, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar and former Congressman Beto O’Rourke, along with more than 45 other community partners, will take to the streets in a unified, peaceful March for Truth and to celebrate the El Paso community.

Borderland residents will begin peacefully gathering along San Marcial Street next to Bowie High School at 5:00 p.m. A brief rally featuring area leaders and community voices including Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, will begin at 5:30 p.m.; followed by a peaceful march and culminating in a celebration of community at Chalio Acosta Park on Shelter Place where Beto O'Rourke will address the community. We will unite to enjoy music, entertainment, and great company with the backdrop of our vibrant, multi-cultural region.

Women’s March El Paso is coordinating with a group of more than 60 local musicians including Fixed Idea, Radio La Chusma, Sinbuenos, mariachis and more to bring the Border region to life in South El Paso. We look forward to proudly showcasing our local talent.

El Paso is a strong and safe community because of its people and its values. Border communities are a place of opportunity and hope. Trump’s fixation on a border wall and his distortions of life in El Paso and along the border are unacceptable. Our communities will always stand to include immigrants, oppose racism, and defend the truth. All of us must make a choice about whether we stand up for the truth or allow Trump to degrade our dignity and rights.

I need to post my few photos and videos on our local right-wing facebook group...maybe here, too, although I now think that's not timely.
