Border talks at impasse as shutdown looms Friday, officials say

Source: Washington Post

Bipartisan talks aimed at resolving the border wall dispute and averting a government shutdown Friday have broken down and are at an impasse, two people familiar with the situation said Sunday. The people spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the private deliberations.

Lawmakers had been trading offers, trying to finalize how much money could go to barriers along the border as President Trump demands money for his wall. Trump has called for $5.7 billion, but lawmakers were trying to find a number between $1.3 billion and $2 billion that would be acceptable to both sides. At the same time, Democrats were trying to limit the number of detention beds that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency would have access to. Democrats want to cap detention beds as a way to limit aggressive detention activities by ICE. One of the people familiar with the situation said that was the issue that led to the impasse.

Lawmakers and Trump face a Feb. 15 deadline to pass new legislation to keep the government open. If they don’t, large portions of the government will begin to shut down. The Homeland Security Department and other agencies are operating on a short-term spending bill that Trump signed Jan. 25, when he ended the nation’s longest ever government shutdown after 35 days. The shutdown was caused by his demand for border wall money — and Democrats’ refusal to provide it.

The breakdown in talks makes it uncertain how the situation will be resolved. Trump has threatened to declare a national emergency to circumvent Congress and build his wall with the military, but that option faces GOP opposition and legal hurdles.

That Air Force veteran is still collecting donations for a privately built wall.

Of course, he has been known to be a bit shady in his handling of donation money.

10. Wall Money Funding - Fiscal Conservatism.

What if we propose money to fund Trump's wall with a new tax on the wealthier people to pay for it. We are being conservative like they supposingly claim to be by not increasing the deficit. Ask them where they plan to get the money for this without increasing the deficit like they use to do when Obama was president.

There are other priorities that need funding. If Trump wants a big, beautiful vanity wall, he can pay for it.

12. There's very little enthusiasm for a wall among residents of the border towns

COLUMBUS, N.M. — Just minutes from the border in rural New Mexico, the Borderland Cafe in the village of Columbus serves burritos and pizza to local residents, Border Patrol agents and visitors from other parts of the country seeking a glimpse of life on the frontier. The motto painted on the wall proclaims “Life is good in the Borderland.”

“This is the sleepiest little town you could think of,” said Adriana Zizumbo, 31, who was raised in Columbus and owns the cafe with her husband. “The only crisis we’re facing here is a shortage of labor. Fewer people cross the border to work than before, and Americans don’t want to get their hands dirty doing hard work.”

Enough about the wall already,” she said. “We have other problems here that need fixing.”

Congress gives Trump $5 billion for the wall the day that all illegal immigrants are made citizens and Trump and Pence resign. He could say that this was a big win for the country.

It's Dems wanting to put language in that is a backdoor way to limit ICE detentaining asylum-seekers.

This is resolvable and will be resolved. Dems will have other chances to get to the same outcome in future appropriations and authorization bills.
