Americans view Mueller as more credible than Trump, but views of his probe are scattered

Source: WaPo

As the special counsel investigation seems to be nearing its final stage, Americans view Robert S. Mueller III as far more credible than President Trump, but the public has scattered and partisan perceptions of Mueller’s motives and what he has found so far, according to a new Washington Post-Schar School poll.

Fifty-six percent to 33 percent, more say they trust Mueller’s version of the facts than Trump’s. And by nearly as wide a margin, more believe Mueller is mainly interested in “finding out the truth” than trying to “hurt Trump politically.”

Depending on what Mueller finds, the public seems to view the stakes as high, according to the poll, conducted last week by The Post and the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. More than 6 in 10 say that if Mueller concludes Trump obstructed justice or authorized his campaign to coordinate with Russians in an effort to win the 2016 election, Congress should begin impeachment hearings to remove him from office. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has taken a cautious approach to addressing questions on the topic, saying in a recent NBC interview, “We shouldn’t be impeaching for a political reason, and we shouldn’t avoid impeachment for a political reason.”

Just over 4 in 10 Americans believe Mueller has proved members of Trump’s presidential campaign lied about contacts with Russians, and views on that question split sharply on partisan lines. More than 6 in 10 Democrats believe Mueller has proved Trump campaign members lied about such contacts, while more than 7 in 10 Republicans say he has not.

"Just over 4 in 10 Americans believe Mueller has proved members of Trump’s presidential campaign lied about contacts with Russians"

Multiple members of Trump's presidential campaign have pled guilty to lying about contacts with Russians so what proof are they holding out for? Various Mueller court filings tally some 200 such meetings so the contacts were massive. This can be traced to how MSM frame the meaning of what Mueller has already uncovered. Apparently they are afraid of the consequences of telling the truth so they put a spin favorable to Trump on what pleading guilty to lying under oath means. What other conclusion can one draw if nearly 6 in 10 Americans don't believe that Trump people have lied about contacts with Russia. Something is seriously wrong with MSM reporting on this issue with so many people being misinformed.

Could be more impactful than I realize so you make a good point. Next up, what makes some people more gullible than others.

... you’re watching Maddow, you know trump is guilty. If you’re watching Hannity, you think trump is the victim of a deep state conspiracy. If you’re watching the Kardashians, you don’t know anything. Just who we are these days.

Longtime Trump advisor Roger Stone has been arrested and indicted by the special counsel on seven charges, including obstruction, making false statements, and witness tampering. This is the first indictment that shows directed collusion from the top of the Trump campaign – potentially from Trump himself.

Stone himself revealed that he communicated with then-chief executive of the Trump campaign Steve Bannon in October 2016 about the WikiLeaks dumps.

Stone was a longtime business partner with Paul Manafort, and advocated for Trump’s selection of Manafort as his campaign manager.

George Papadopoulos was informed about the stolen materials on April 26, 2016.

The meeting was facilitated by Trump associate Michael Caputo..

Or, will a highly redacted summary be given to Congress, and even less to the public. And nothing in the courts involving any of the Trumps, including Kushner.

I hope my dread is unfounded.
