A video showing a white woman swearing at the general manager of a Mexican restaurant in West Virginia for speaking Spanish went viral over the weekend.
English is our first language, so you need to speak English, the woman, identified in the video as Jill, screamed at Sergio Budar, the manager. Get the f--- out of my country.
One of two videos capturing the incident shows how customers at Tampico Mexican Restaurant in Parkersburg, West Virginia, were astonished at the womans remarks.
"I am a citizen of this country. And I didn't say this to her, but how am I going to leave if this is my country, too?" Budar, who's from Mexico and has lived in the U.S. for two decades, told Univision in Spanish on Monday. The website Latino Rebels first reported the story on Sunday.

(21,624 posts)Very diminutive guy in his 60s; couldn't have been more than 5'. And the bigot was a big, overweight oaf - straight out of casting central for a MAGA rally.
The Chinese man looked him straight in the eye and said: "You go. Now!" And the jerk left.
This was in '94 or '95. The early days of hate radio.
That incident - plus the frequent retelling of Lumpbaugh "bad minority/woman" tales at work - convinced me it wasn't just a fluke.

(37,648 posts)Yeah, those overweight MAGATs love Rush Limpballs...because he's older and overweight and disgusting, too.
I've been to Asian restaurants (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, whatever) a number of times. They are almost always run by Asians. A big DUH. I wouldn't be surprised if they spoke the language...I never paid attention, frankly. Except that the waiters spoke English (if only haltingly in some cases); otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to communicate.
I think it's very normal and sometimes adds to the charm of the restaurant.
Bigots.

(3,764 posts)they love the Mexican food but hate the Mexicans that work there and speak Spanish. They expect to go to a Mexican restaurant and eat the delicious Mexican food and not hear any Spanish, which is ridiculous. I wonder if they went to a Greek, Italian or French restaurant and heard Greek, Italian of French spoken would the be offended, or is just Spanish and Chinese that offends them.

(24,324 posts)everyday, small, big, large town, small city "Japanese" restaurant are Chinese?
So perhaps it adds to the 'charm," but most of those Chinese folks know nothing about Japanese cuisine. Which is ONE reason what you get is only vaguely Japanese.
Same is true of your local "Chinese'"restaurant, most of which are owned and staffed by Chinese from Fujian Province. And of course the food isn't Chinese either.
If you ever watched, you would notice that the staff in those "Chinese" restaurants almost NEVER eat anything on the menu.. cause it ain't Chinese food..
Korean restaurants are a slightly different story.. for another time...
And Thai, Vietnamese,, etc.....

(37,648 posts)I more often see the staff. But I do know the difference between Chinese and Japanese people, although I can't swear I'd always be able to tell, esp in a restaurant situation. Even so, it's normal to see and hear Asians in Asian restaurants, Indians in Indian restaurants, Spanish people in Mexican restaurants, etc.
Jack Soo - famous actor who portrayed Asians over decades, often Chinese. But he's actually of Japanese ancestry. I liked him a lot.
And THIS....is NOT an Asian at all (Marlon Brando as a Japanese man in an old movie - cringeworthy alert):

In fact, most Americans expect folks in foreign lands to respond in English to our queries. Take your choice; 1) lack of meds 2) lack of education, understanding and love for your fellow neighbor. Head scratcher.

She claimed that English-only was in the Constitution as our national language. She did not know wearing a MAGA hat within a 100 feet of a polling place was illegal.
She was laughed at by others in the line and left. At least no one publicly agreed with her.

...This country is diverse. It is part of the deal. They come from everywhere: here and there and everywhere. The people that come here speak all kinds of languages. My grandparents spoke very little English. They spoke Yiddish. When they came here in 1910, there were communities (neighborhoods) that spoke Yiddish. Just like there are communities that speak Spanish. After time, everyone learns English at their own pace...
...Three doors down from me, there are people from Syria. They speak another language. It is ok. They own the place, and often they speak English. Across the way there is a couple from an island 500 miles east of South Africa. I don't recall the name. Now, that couple speaks perfect English, but I know they speak another language too. We have Korean people in our neighborhood and they speak another language.
I guess the lady didn't understand what the U.S.A is..and its history. Oh, I used to teach history, but that lady sounds too dumb to be a student of mine. I don't think she would learn much with an attitude like she has..
