Republican Mark Harris to be called next to testify in 9th district election hearing

Source: Charlotte Observer

NC Board of Elections chairman Bob Cordle said the hearing into the 9th district will likely continue into Thursday.

Cordle had initially hoped to wrap up the hearing and vote Tuesday on whether to hold a new election or certify the race. Cordle also said Republican Mark Harris will be the next witness called.

With Andy Yates' cross-examination set to continue, Harris would likely be called Wednesday morning.

Can you imagine if McCrory were still governor.

They'd throw Dan McCready in jail for complaining - and then throw away the cell.

Over this, and laws to change.

Election day, 2012, I happen to be visiting my grandmother at a nursing home here in AR. Three different campaigns had people going door to door harrassing (yes, harrassing) residents over whether thd'd turned in their ballots. Apparently, they had been coming daily for several days, and had clipboards where they clearly had been crossing off names as they had collected. My frandmother had two different people come ask if she needed someone to get her ballot to the courthouse. Annoyed, she let both teams know my aunt had taken her to vote earlier that day. Now way in hell she would trust someone to get her ballot turned in. It was important to her to go to the actual polling place. Unfortunatley, two days later they found her dead from a hear attack at 86.

It never felt right to me that candidate teams could go door-to-door over several days trying to collect ballots. Just as in the NC race, people have no idea what these "ballot bundlers" did with their ballots. There ought to be a law limiting the number of ballots any one person can turn in on behalf of others. And penalties for mishandling ballots and conspiracy to cheat ought to be very steep. Also, there ought to be a way for a voter to track down how their ballot was recorded. Like go to a website, type in a ballot id of sort and see what votes it reflected.

But, there ought to be numerous ideas to insure a voter's intent cannot be thwarted, and amaybe in doing so, increase voter participation. Ultimately, we need safe and secure voting from home or on phones using the internet.
