Petition to sell Montana to Canada is gaining support

With the national debt continuing to grow, a group of citizens have created an online petition in hopes of selling Montana to Canada in hopes of reducing the United States' debt.

Nearly 10,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org in the last week that supports selling the Treasure State for $1 trillion to Canada. While $1 trillion is a hefty price tag, the overall United States deficit passed $22 trillion last week.

The US debt has grown on average by at least $ 1 trillion a year in recent years.

While Montana is the fourth-largest state in area, it is only 44th-most populated state in the United States with a total population of 1.06 million. Estimates of Montana's annual economic production are around $45 billion.

will ever mature enough to consider healthcare a basic human right. Too many people don't know how to do simple research or do critical thinking, and that other countries' healthcare systems can't be as bad as the right says, or else their citizens would rebel.

Washington State is considered by most people outside of the US to be a southern Canadian colony. Indeed, from Seattle, it's actually closer to Vancouver, BC, than it is Vancouver, WA. 4I suspect many of us in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and Portland, OR would jump at the chance to be part of Canada. I know I would.

and then there was the "Jade Helm" BS in Texas..........................

Maybe people in this country instead of selling your state, and having Congressional members basically selling you out with tax cuts, maybe you should think that the people that have all of the money should pay their taxes on the income they make.................................

Just ask the Walton's how much they paid in taxes or Jeff Bezo's.......................that you are subsidizing ..................absolutely amazing.......................

I doubt it would ever happen, but we are so much different on the west coast in comparison with the rest of the country in so many ways. Well, I should say "most" of the rest of the country. There are some states that share the same sentiments as we do politically speaking.

to drive to Canada for health care. As a native Montanan, I heartily second this movement. Having grown up 40 miles from the porous border that my English grandfather walked across in 1910 ... and stayed ... thus becoming an "illegal" and having watched CBC during many of my formative years (US channels didn't have strong enough signals in those days), I've always considered myself somewhat Canadian.

In fact, many US Easterners ask me if I am. Apparently my accent is more akin to Canadian-speak than to US-speak.

But even if the obstacles you mention were no longer obstacles, I doubt very much that Canada would take MT, especially at the price requested.

Our Gross Domestic Product is $400 billion, so that's nine times more than Montana's. How about Canada pays $4 trillion for Maryland and breaks even in 10 years. Plus we have a lot of US Government facilities here, which can be rented back to the government for additional profit, just like Trump does.

Dee Bishop (Dean Martin): Mace, you think we could make a go of it in Montana?

Mace Bishop (Jimmy Stewart): Dee, there's a town up there called Missoula. Prettiest little place you ever saw.

Dee Bishop: What about the Indians?

Mace Bishop: And the Rockies, they're snow-capped, and the slopes are forested. And there are lots of lakes and valleys.

Mace Bishop: Yes. Yes, there are Cree in Montana.

Having spent some of my happier adult years teaching in Missoula (VERY blue area of the state), I can recommend it. And the reservation of the Confederated Tribes (Flathead, Salish Kootenay) is right next door en route to Flathead Lake. The other tribes are farther afield.

One of my BILs is part Eastern Shoshone and enrolled as such.

at the U of M, then taught at MCHS (Sentinel) for several years.

Loved my students, colleagues and the area! I was born and raised in the north-central part of the state east of the Rockies, about 40 miles from the border with Canada. We used to refer to Missoula as "tropical Montana," because the temperatures were comparatively milder there, whereas we usually had to use head-bolt heaters in the winter for our cars to start.

The state was MUCH bluer in my youth, with Mike Mansfield, Lee Metcalf and Pat Williams representing us in DC. From this, you can deduce that my heyday there was a LONG time ago.

I haven't lived in Missoula since 1980, although I visit the state as often as I can to see family, friends and just to experience the Big Sky.

My sons, who spent much of their own youth there, STILL consider the state home, although one now lives in MD and the other splits his time between Las Vegas and LA. Both are strong Dems, I am very happy to say!
