California parents of 13 plead guilty to torture, abuse

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A California couple who shackled some of their 13 children to beds and starved them in what was a dubbed a “house of horrors” pleaded guilty Friday to torture and other abuse that lasted years.

David and Louise Turpin entered the pleas in Riverside County Superior Court to 14 counts that included cruelty toward their 12 oldest children and imprisoning them in a house that appeared to be neatly kept from the outside, but was festered inside with filth and reeked of human waste.

The couple was arrested in January 2018 when their 17-year-old daughter called 911 after escaping from the family’s home in the city of Perris, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles.

The children, who ranged in age from 2 to 29 at the time, were severely underweight and hadn’t bathed for months. Some of the children had stunted growth and wasted muscles and described being beaten, starved and put in cages.

If a government allows homeschooling, it should be mandatory that they are required to have checkups. home visits. The State loves it as they dont have to pay for the costs of education of these HS kids. So they should have to then at least pay for inspectors.

Even IF they are not abusers in a physical, or sexual way, they can be religious nut jobs, or white supremacists, who can raise their children with Mein Kampf if they want. Or just isolating them and not allowing them to meet any other children or join other extra circular activities outside the home. All of these affect the development of children.

for the death, or the child abuse. Just gun charges.

Five adults and 11 children, ages 1 to 15, were found at the compound, and law enforcement officials have said the children appeared to be malnourished. The children have been placed in the custody of the state Children, Youth and Families Department.

One of the defendants, Jany Leveille, has been charged in federal court with being an illegal immigrant in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The other four defendants, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, Hujrah Wahhaj, Subhannah Wahhaj and Lucas Morton, have been accused of a conspiracy related to Leveille’s alleged weapon possession. All the defendants are in their mid-30s to early 40s, and all remain in jail.

None of the five defendants is facing charges in connection to the death of 3-year-old Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, whose body was found inside a tunnel on the compound in Amalia near the Colorado border in August.

Local prosecutors have alleged that the toddler, Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, died in December 2017 in a religious ritual carried out because his father believed his son was possessed by demons, and that the child was denied anti-seizure medication or medical care.

There are accusations that they were planning terror attacks, possibly using the children. Whether there'll be any charges for that, I can't tell. But killing the child? Starving the others? They appear to have got off scot-free.
