Lightfoot takes early lead in wide-open mayoral race (Chicago)
Source: Chicago Sun-Times
Riding an anti-corruption tidal wave, Lori Lightfoot was poised Tuesday to punch her ticket to the April 2 mayoral runoff, with Bill Daley and Toni Preckwinkle close behind in a race for second place that was too close to call with incomplete returns.
With 82 percent of the precincts reporting, Lightfoot was leading with nearly 17.4 percent of the vote. Preckwinkle and Daley were locked in a battle to be Lightfoots runoff opponent with nearly 16 percent and 14.8 percent respectively.
Im trying to just stay in the moment, Lightfoot told the Chicago Sun-Times. I dont want anything to jinx it.

(18,402 posts)Daley still in third place, and losing on Preckwinkle rather than gaining. Thee runoff seems like it will definitely be Lori and Toni, bar any surprises.

(6,034 posts)No one is getting 50%. The fact this election would go to a runoff is the only sure thing about it.

(6,034 posts)I think I would support Lori. Just because Toni is tied in with Ed Burke. But then there isn't a Chicago pol who isn't.
She came on strong in the last week or two. A month ago it didn't look like she had a shot. Do you think it was the Sun-Times endorsement?

(18,402 posts)I think the Sun Times endorsement gave her the boost. But also, she had a good ground game I think.
Dont know how the April election will go: the voters for the 12 other candidates will realign, and all the people who sat it out on the first round will weigh in.
I was undecided between Preckwinkle and Lightfoot, but in the end decided to vote for Preckwinkle because I didnt want to split the vote and let Daley benefit. I didnt actually think Lori would do that well.

She will runoff in April most likely against Preckwinkle
Preckwinkle was expected to run off against Daley . He is still running third and has already conceded
