Pompeo promises intervention if Philippines is attacked in South China Sea amid rising Chinese milit

Source: Washington Post

MANILA — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday that any attack on Philippine aircraft or ships in the South China Sea will trigger a response from the United States under a mutual defense treaty between the two countries, a firm assurance to its longtime ally amid rising Chinese militarization in the contested waters.

“China’s island building and military activities in the South China Sea threaten [Philippine] sovereignty, security and therefore economic livelihood, as well as that of the United States,” said Pompeo, speaking at a joint news conference in Manila, where he landed last night after the conclusion of the Hanoi summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“As the South China Sea is part of the Pacific, any armed attack on Philippine forces, aircraft or public vessels in the South China Sea will trigger mutual defense obligations under Article 4 of our mutual defense treaty,” Pompeo added.

The article spells out that the Philippines and the United States would come to each other’s defense if either is attacked, as such an attack on either party would “be dangerous to its own peace and safety.”

Haven't they finished wagging the dog and have work to do besides destroying America.

The are anarchists. Willing or a willing dupe of other kleptocrats advocating anarchy in America.

He's too dumb to see the threat and too willing to sell out America and its allies for a shot at more personal wealth.

... who can clue him on these matters. I just found that Trump really didn't send an advance team
to Hanoi to meet w/the N. Koreans so they could at least figure out some common grounds and
have a base for their talks. So when Trump got there all that "complex stuff" was way over his head
and Cohen's testifying must have put a burr up his ass so he just left and went home.

He is so far in over his head that it is not funny.

meeting with Kim Hyuk Chol, for a few days, and had met him a couple of times before at Panmunjeom and Seoul. He also met him at the White House.

However, it looks like Bolton and Trump didn't stick to the agenda that the working level negotiators had arranged, so Ri Yong Ho, DPRK Foreign Minister, stopped the talks in Hanoi.

South Korean analysts say that the move was deliberately planned ahead of time to end the talks without an agreement.

There was too much criticism at home from the intel community, think tanks, press and Congress.

Is a lost cause, because trump doesn't do that. He'll refuse to do anything siting excuse after excuse. He never keeps agreements. Not unless he gets something out of it for himself.

Such a wind bag. I hope the government of the Phillipines is smart enough to take that “promise” with a grain of salt.

Just curious...with pulling our troops out of Syria and withdrawing from Afghanistan....when will we be discussing cutting the bloated military budget to reflect this “down sizing”??
