(354 posts)It's not substandard. I think three or four countries stands out as the standard of African aviation, which is Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Lagos and Johannesburg in my opinion.

On October 29, 2018, Lion Air Flight 610, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, crashed into the Java Sea 13 minutes after take off from SoekarnoHatta International Airport, Jakarta, Indonesia. The flight was a scheduled domestic flight to Depati Amir Airport, Pangkal Pinang, Indonesia. All 189 onboard died. This was both the first fatal aviation accident and first hull loss of a 737 MAX. The aircraft was delivered to Lion Air just two months prior. Following the Lion Air accident, Boeing issued an operational manual guidance, advising airlines how to address erroneous cockpit readings. The crash is currently under investigation.
On March 10, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, registration ET-AVJ, crashed approximately six minutes after takeoff at 0530 UTC from Addis Ababa. The flight was a scheduled flight from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Nairobi, Kenya. All 149 passengers and 8 crew members on board died. At the time of the accident, the aircraft was only 4 months old. The cause of the accident is unclear as of 10th March 2019, however The Guardian reported The flight had unstable vertical speed after takeoff", based on a tweet from flight tracking service Flightradar24.
Both right after departure. Hope there was enough left to pinpoint the cause.

(7,277 posts)(CNN) For the second time in less than six months, a brand-new Boeing aircraft has crashed just minutes into a flight.
All 157 people on board the Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa that crashed on Sunday morning have died, the airline has confirmed.
The tragedy follows the Lion Air flight that went down over the Java Sea in late October, killing all 189 people on board. ...
"It's highly suspicious," said Mary Schiavo, a CNN aviation analyst and the former Inspector General of the U.S. Transportation Department. "Here we have a brand-new aircraft that's gone down twice in a year. That rings alarm bells in the aviation industry, because that just doesn't happen."

(23,747 posts)My wife and I were on board an Ethiopian Airline from Asmara Eritrea to Addis Ababa enroute to Newark New Jersey. Our flight out of Addis was cancelled with no explanation and we had a 25 hour ground stop. Then leaving Addis we flew to Abidjon the Ivory Coast and were held on the plane at the gate for 3 and half hours because of a mechanical problem. After the passangers (about 250) nearly revolted, they let us into the terminal and we waited another 2 hours. Finally we left and then spent 17 hours flying to Newark.

(94,493 posts)"While the cause of this sad loss is undetermined at this time, we stand by our commitment to putting the safety of our passengers and crew first by maintaining complete and undoubtable safe operations, and as such, we have taken the decision to suspend operations of both our new Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, effective from Monday March 11, 2019, until more information is received," said Cayman Airways President and CEO, Fabian Whorms.
Mr. Whorms said Cayman Airways is currently working in coordination with both the Boeing Corporation and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands (CAACI) to monitor the investigation into Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.
"We offer our valued customers our continued assurance that all prudent and necessary actions required for the safe operation of our Max 8's will be accomplished before the aircraft are returned to service," he said, adding that some relatively minor, but necessary schedule and capacity changes will be needed over the next few days to manage the flight schedule in instances where the national airline may be short on available aircraft.
"We appreciate the understanding and support of our customers as we implement these changes, and apologize in advance for any inconveniences that may be caused," he said.

(CNN) The Chinese government has grounded all Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets, after an Ethiopian Airlines plane of the same model crashed shortly after take-off killing everyone onboard.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China said in a statement on Monday morning that all domestic Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets would be out of action until 6 p.m. local time, due to its principle of "zero tolerance for safety hazards."
The Ethiopian Airlines incident was second time in less than six months that a brand-new Boeing aircraft has crashed just minutes into a flight. A Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight went down over the Java Sea in late October, killing all 189 people on board.
"Given in both air crashes, the aircrafts were newly delivered Boeing 737 MAX 8, and both accidents occur during the take-off, they share certain similarities," the administration said in a statement.
