Trump budget again slashes aid to Great Lakes cleanup program

Source: Detroit News

President Donald Trump's latest budget proposes a 5-percent reduction in non-defense spending, including a 90-percent cut for a popular Great Lakes cleanup program that bipartisan Michigan lawmakers pledged to fight.

Funding for the $300 million Great Lakes Restoration Initiative would be cut by $270 million to $30 million under the budget released Monday — the third year in a row the Trump budget team proposed cuts to the program.

A senior administration official told reporters Monday that regional economic programs "are primarily state and local activities and should be funded as such." . . .

The Great Lakes are merely "local"? And we are to spend less on their cleanup than a year or less of Trump's golf outings?

Last year Congress fully funded the initiative, despite Asshole's desire to gut it. Hopefully they'll do it again this year.

So why worry about the world's biggest supply of fresh water?

There's no sense wasting money on cleaning up the planet we're so carelessly destroying. The planet won't matter because god is going to "rapture" all the born-agains and the planet will be left to sinners and non-believers. They don't need the planet anymore, it'll be "disposable" for them, or so they believe. I've gotten the same answer from more than a few evangelicals. This is their official position on destroying our planet, believe it or not. The fucking rapture.

I'm not a big rap or hip-hop fan, and almost all pop music nauseates me, but I remember my elders feeling that same way about the music I dearly loved back in the day. My parents thought I was from a different planet than them. Now, the sky pilots.... I was raised religiously, but even at an early age I could see the hypocrisy and sheer lunacy of believing in the "angry daddy in the sky". I've only steeled my beliefs since then, so yeah, I'm pretty down on the entire evangelical set. Nice talking to a fellow non-believer! And a belated welcome to Democratic Underground!
