Boeing CEO assures Trump that 737 MAX is safe

Source: Politico

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg reassured President Donald Trump Tuesday that the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft is safe, the company confirmed.

The conversation occurred even as governments including the European Union, the United Kingdom, France and Germany joined others around in the world in grounding the widely sold plane model or banning it from their skies amid questions about Sunday's fatal crash of an Ethiopian Airlines jet.

The Federal Aviation Administration has so far maintained that it has no basis for a similar decision until more data can be collected.

The two men spoke by phone shortly after Trump complained on Twitter that planes are "becoming far too complex to fly."

what i took away is that Boeing had made modifications and added a system to defeat the issue of the nose rising possibly causing a stall, and did not let pilots know about it?! Even though the pilots could switch to manual basically? I tried to copy the reason Boeing gave for not informing anyone about this but the page is protected.

I fly SW a lot. I wonder how many times I've been on one of these planes.

that's 2 of them that have gone down and killed every person aboard, right?

i've had more than one person tell me they NEVER buy the first year model of a new car.

However he is also not wrong. The Lion Air crash was caused by an automated system responding to an improperly installed sensor, the airplane itself was not unsafe and neither was the software. The two things that contributed to the accident were maintenace not following a procedure and the pilots not understanding how the automated system worked. The lack of understanding was related to Boeing not explaining it correctly, however the previous pilots in the exact same plane understood the system and disabled it so take that for what you want.

With the current crash there is no evidence that it was the same system, there is just conjecture so therefore the plane is not unsafe. Airlines and politicians are just doing what comes naturally and protecting themselves by grounding the plane.

If two 737's that are 10 years old crashed 6 months apart nobody would run around immediately and demand they all be grounded. It's just human nature to assume something new is the cause.

As for Trump's dumb tweet, well he's a moron. Someone should suggest he start flying around in a DC3 if he doesn't want technology in the cockpit.

He defines stupid. His boldest move was to become Putin's stooge. In exchange, he is now where he is. What will come out in time, will define him forever. Trump doesn't know it, but in comparison, Nixon will look a lot better than he does now. Nixon will never look good. Never. But Trump will define corruption in a whole different way.
The very last place he should be in is a discussion about airplane safety and qualifications for such safety. Trump is in a place he doesn't belong. And that includes many places.
